if the meta-datas are deleted and you only have the m2ts-files you can transcode these files to quicktime-mov using adobe media encoder CS4 or CS5, if you have installed encore and premiere.

first of all – using m4v for DVD (even as a temp-codec) is a very bad idea. m4v is MPEG4, a very high compressed codec – that´s a distribution-codec but no Editing-Codec.

if you´re using streamclip you could simply demux the original VOBs into the elementary streams to use them with DVDSP and create a new DVD out of it. but as far as I understand you need to re-encode at a lower bitrate because you need to put more films on the disk as there has been before.

so the best way to go is to create a quicktime-mov from the films (using streamclip export (cmd-e) and create a PRO RES file.

take care of the field-dominance, you should check it with streamclip prior export looking into the VOB-files information (cmd-i).

to do a proper encoding of your new assets you can use compressor.

if thi AVI is captured from a computer running powerpoint it will never be sharp on your DVD.

so there´s nothing you can´t do . it could have bad or even worth results, especially if you´ve captured at 10fps.

as I don´t knwo which formats (SD/HD) you are putting together I would advice also to output as one of the uncompressed formats, so you´ll have the best qualitly. another posibilty it to output as foto-jpeg 75%. it has high quality pictures and approx the same data-rate as DV-codec.

be awared to check thar all field-dominances to be the same. all DV-formats are lower first, uncompressed NTSC is lower as well but PAL and most HD-formats are upper field first.

if you going to create a DVD with wrong field-dominances your video will shuttering while playback.

canon 7D is working progressive, but you might better download the canon-plugin for transcoding to ProRES. it will save all the meta-datas to the file as well.

Hi John,
Encore is not an Edit-Tool, it´s an authoring-tool.

the best way to go is to edit your video in premiere, export it as a single film and import the final (edited) film to encore for authoring.

if you´ll do one more step, you can encode your video to m2v and AC-3 for authoring, that´s what DVD-authors would normally do prior authoring. we never take a mov- or avi-file into authoring.

when you´re encoding your assets prior authoring, you have a much better control of it´s quality.

so the best way to go would be:

1. edit your film in premier
2. encode your assets with adobe media encoder
3. author your dvd/bd within encore

I guess you need to unselect the auto-button-routing and do it by your own.

sometimes the auto-routing don´t work very well (same with DVD Studio). it´s just an automatic that could help you do your job a bit faster, but in my most cases it did not, so you need to do the button-routing manually.

do you know how to do that?

as you described there are a lot issues with it.
