this is not possible for DVD under normal circumstances – because of DVD-spec.

you can create it using a workarround, but this is not very good, as it would have very slow navigation.

it would be easily possible with blu-ray-disk and a full-spec-authoring-tool, but to do so with encore is a bit more tricky.

the most easy way for you is to use encore on mac, or if you have FCP7 you can also use compressor to create (very simple) blu-rays.

if you would like to do more work on BD I would advice to get PC-soft from DVD Logics called EasyBD Suite.

I see 4 (?) options to select, is that correct? or are there additional options with the arms?

so the most easy way is to create 4 screens/menus with the arm(s) on each single position and some additional (hidden) auto-activated button. these (automatic) button should navigate your from menu-page to menu-page (with different arm-positions).

you cant use a normal button-overlay for this, as these arms starting at the same position and it´s not allowed to have overlapping buttons with DVD.

if you would go BD you could create different muli-layer-sub-pages with the different arm-positions and switch between them, that would be more easy and very nice for your project.

VBR make sence, when the target-bitrate gets to low for a CBR because of the duration of your discs content.

if you are at 28MBit that´s far enough to get real good picture-results with H264. the max. video-bitrate for BD is 40MBit, but I would never go that high, as there are allways some peaks in the coding.

so you can choose the CBR-way.

if your taget-bitrate getting under 25Mbit I would think about changing to VBR.

most hollywood-films having a max. target-bitrate at approx. 25MBit.

YOU ARE GOING A WRONG WAY!

h264 is no part of DVD-spec. you need to export/transcode your stuff to MPEG2 SD.

as you´ve created h264, they will all betranscoded within encore to MPEG2, so you are cascading transcodes. that´s the reason why your picture-quality get lost on the one hand.

on the other hand your footage/film might be HD, but DVD is SD only, so you might be irritated by the low quality of SD as well.

another problem might be field-domionance – if you have an original interlaced HD-film the field-dominance is upper first, but SD NTSC has lower filed first, this will cause a wrong field-dominance, so you need to set a field-shift-filter.

I would advice to encode the assets prior authoring.

in fact this is no real playlist for blu-ray, as all clips will be placed in a different title and a seperate movieobject will call this title.

normally you´ll one playlist with different playlist-items that containing the different clips with a seamlessly connection, so you´ll be able to skip chapters forward and backwards – not possible with encore!

workarround: export a selfcontained movie from premiere and encode this using adobe media encoder.

import these assets into encore.

hi james,
if you created your menu as still-menu using photoshop to create a PSD-file you´ll be able to open it with mac-encore as well.

since CS5.0 it should be possible to open PC-encore-projects with macs as well.
