the real first thing you need to know is to make a bitbudgeting before you start encoding your assets.

NEVER use quicktime-movies within DVD Studio, and also don´t try to edit with any DVD authoring-suite. It´s not an editing-suite.

DVD+/-R media couldn´t give you the full bandwith that DVD-specs allow, you need to have a max. bitrate at peak-rates of 8.5Mbit/s (video and audio).

replicated DVDs could have up to 10MBit/s.

allways use MPEG2 and dolby AC3 or maybe DTS audio. nearly 80% of all failed DVDs that I´ve seen dependending on uncompressed (PCM) audio.

make sure that you allways using a track as a firstplay-item and not to go to menu.

there are few issues to solve:

1.) BD-specs:
1080p23.98, 1080p24, (1080i50) or 1080i60

so you can use your 1080p25-material as 1080psf25 within a 1080i50-sequenz, but straight 1080p25 is not supported.

and: it won´t be played in int. BD-players, as 25/50fps-playback is mandatory only for countries that broadcast with 25/50fps, like europe or australia.

doubling the framerate make no sence, same to use 1080pfs25, as it wont be played.

you got two possibilities to make sure your BD would be played in USA:

1.) conform your 1080p25 to 1080p24 and live with 4% slowing down of your video
2.) use the frame-control of compressor and create 1080p24 out of your 1080p25 at the same duration.

but this will take dacades/very, very long time.

last point:

I wouldn´t use MPEG2HD for blu-ray as H264 is much better at lower bitrates, and compressor can do it.

there are a few technical things you might think about in your discussion aobut SD and HD:

– upscaling SD to HD will take some time, if you would like to do it with good scaling-tools
– encoding HD-material will take much! longer than SD-material

but there are a few advantages as well:

– you can create a popup-menu on upscaled material on your BD
– you´ve got better control of the upscaling-quality, the upscaler in tv-monitors are not very good

so I would advice to upscale anyway.

roxio toast could create BD-Data-volumes.

what you have to do is go to the data-tab, select UDF-format and select the data-content you would like to have on your BD-data.

NOTE: this BD wont be played within a stand-alone-player, but it would be recognised within mac os.

if you will create a BDMV (BD-movie mode) you need to select the video-tab and add the video or set BDMV-folder if it´s an allready muxed BDMV-folder, so it would be played within standalone-players.

2n note: you can´t create a BD-data with encore, as it would author BDMVs, but you can add BD-ROM-data to your BDMV.

hi tom,
you need to output BDCMF-images for replication, you can´t use an iso-image, that could be done from any encore-output using rivergate blustreak tracer CMF.

if you need more “profesisional” features you should use EasyBD for authoring and blustreak tracer CMF for premastering.

you need to programm a so called playlist – as you have within your CD-player, but that´s not possible with encore itself.

there is a possibilty to create it with DVD Studio pro and DVD AfterEdit.

but it´s a bunch of work and pre/post-commands-knowledge is necessary as well as deep programmers experience.

so – it wont easily be possible with your project.

some enlosure have problems working with eSATA-connection because of the bridge-chip that´s been used for USB-connection.

I have an external enclosure from OWC, that´s working fine, 2-4-speed tested.

yes – I have experience with this programm, and you can create multi-layer-menus using DVD Logics IG-Editor.

EasyBD can use compressor-encoded 264-files, as they are 100% BD-spec-valid.

if you need to create nice looking BDs with full-spec-features you should buy EasyBD Suite.
