BD Authoring – best way to go from 1080p 25p
Hi,
Seems I have to deliver a freshly finished documentary on a BD.
Since I am in Europe, my project was shot and edited in 1080p 25p.
Now I need to get this stuff to BD.I spent a day digging through posts and specifications and I am only getting more and more confused.
Here are my doubts:
I understand that 1080p 25p is not a valid BD format. Is that true?
I understand that 720p 25p is not a valid BD format. Is that true?In my situation, going from 25p to 24p is a no go.
The only 2 ways I hope that make sense are:1) Downscaling and doubling the frame rate to 720p 50p
2) Rendering to 1080i 50iRegarding (1) it costs me a resolution, but seems straightforward.
However, I understand that such a disc won’t play in US, right?Regarding (2) according to Wikipedia resolution specifications the 1080 50i is not valid. Can anybody confirm it or deny pointing to a reliable source?
Finally, even if it is a legal way, will my 1080 50i (in fact PsF) disc play in US?
Last question – I will use Compressor to transcode from a ProRes 422 HQ 1080p 25p master to an asset-compliant format for Encore CS 5.5 and will use MPEG-2.
However, while trying to make a preset in Compressor basing on a BD MPEG-2 Format and choosing 1920×1080 resolution, I can’t assign 50 FPS (neither progressive or interlace). Any suggestions?

Here are your options:
1920x1080x59.94i(=29.97fps interlaced), 50i(=25fps interlaced) (16:9)
1920x1080x24p, 23.976p (16:9)
1440x1080x59.94i, 50i (16:9) AVC / VC-1 only
1440x1080x24p, 23.976p (16:9) AVC / VC-1 only
1280x720x59.94p, 50p (16:9)
1280x720x24p, 23.976p (16:9)
Standard Definition Video
720x480x59.94i (4:3/16:9)
720x576x50i (4:3/16:9)To play in the US, it needs to be….PERIOD
1. 1920×1080 59.94i

Why didnt you shoot 24p and why is it not an option?

there are few issues to solve:1.) BD-specs:
1080p23.98, 1080p24, (1080i50) or 1080i60so you can use your 1080p25-material as 1080psf25 within a 1080i50-sequenz, but straight 1080p25 is not supported.
and: it won´t be played in int. BD-players, as 25/50fps-playback is mandatory only for countries that broadcast with 25/50fps, like europe or australia.
doubling the framerate make no sence, same to use 1080pfs25, as it wont be played.
you got two possibilities to make sure your BD would be played in USA:
1.) conform your 1080p25 to 1080p24 and live with 4% slowing down of your video
2.) use the frame-control of compressor and create 1080p24 out of your 1080p25 at the same duration.but this will take dacades/very, very long time.
last point:
I wouldn´t use MPEG2HD for blu-ray as H264 is much better at lower bitrates, and compressor can do it.

So Seems that a 1080 50i is my way. Quite simple and straightforward.
I can’t stretch it to 24p because it is a musical documentary and I have to respect the original recordings that are used.—

From what I’ve read MPEG2 gives reasonable results in much shorter encoding times.I am planning to use about 32-40 mbps bitrate and the quality on previews looks fine for me. I’ll check the H264.
Are there any compatibility issues with H264? Or every player would play it smoothly same way as MPEG2?
Are higher bitrates somehow risky and may they cause choppy playback? Or there’s enough processing power in the players to deal with all bitrates?

No issues as long as you keep your bitrates below 40. Use good media like Verbatim

Forget playing 50i in North America. Only a small fraction of the players and HD displays can handle it.
The least objectionable compromise for a music project where you cannot alter the tempo of the music is to do a 1080/50i to 1080/23.976PsF conversion in Alchemist Platinum HD. There will be frame blending in the image once each second, but this is not very noticeable unless the camera is panning or tilting.
I’ve done several major projects using this method, including some for film recording.
