9.4Mbit/s is much to high unless you are going to create a replicated disc.

for recordable media you should not use more than 8.5Mbit/s (incl. audio).

I do not know why encore works as it works – I´m no programmer, but I think the adobe-guys are smart enough to tell you.

unless you haven´t got enough content, your disk wont be filled completely.

are you using a lot subtitles? how many subtitles are in your subtitle-track?

there are some issues with subtitles.

sometimes encore doesn´t like subtitles that are to close to each other or I´ve heard of some other issues when using a lot subtitles in one subtitle-track.

other solution:

go to the next bestbuy-market (or any friend), get a damned BD-burner, some good medias and start creating your first BD using encore.

they are no more expensive and it´s the ONLY way to go, if you would like to create nice prestigne HD-pictures on optical discs.

forget about DVD.

it might be a good idea just to built your DVD-LD on your harddisc and go to someone who has got DVD AfterEdit Mastering Edition or similar and the dedicated knowledge of DVD-spec and how to create a proper DDP-image.

If you were located in germany I could do this for you – but I guess you are TO FAR away from cologne 😉

this is no issue, it´s the way adobe decided encore should work.

but to change the transcoding-setting of your project is the first thing you should do, when you create a new project.

therefor you need to set the default-transcoding-settings.

Hey Clint,
you should allways use a symbol or a shape for button-highlight, text-highlight is a NO GO on DVD, as the highlight itself have no anti-aliasing and it´s only 2bit. this will result in ugly text-borders.

the button-highlights are very limited for DVD depending on the DVD-specs. it´s a 2bit RLE-grafics that containg all information.

so you have only 4 different colors that you can use for 1! menu at a time, or at least 1 color and 4 different saturations/opacities.

if you have ever seen a menu that containing more that that – that´s not possible. in most cases authoring-programms using a workarround like layered menus to give you the illusion it would work, but it wont.

layered menus have some other disadvantages, they couldn´t have audio and they are very, very slow in reaction.

so the conclusion is:
you can only use 4 colors at a time in your menus, or 1 color with 4 different opacities.

NOTE: button-highlights have NO anti-aliasing

Hi Paul,
I wouldn´t burn a DVD and then create a DDP from it afterwards. there are far to many reasons not to use this workflow – read/write-errors on the disc for example.

as far as I´ve heard, gearmaster pro could create DDP-images from a muliplexed VIDEO_TS-folder from harddisc.

the layerbreak-information is allready present in the video_ts-structure, but it wont be used by most burning-programms.

if you have a mac you could try to control it using the Demo of DVD AfterEdit. There will be a red arrow on the cell, that containing the layerbreak.

you can also easily export DDP-images or write DLTs with the mastering edition of DVD AfterEdit.

Curtins,
you should not import uncompressed movies to encore (MOV or AVI). if you´ll create a propper authoring you transcode your assets prior authoring.

therefor you need to do a bitbudgeting, a calculation of your video/audio-bitrate to not overfill the disc.

encoding could be done with adobe media encoder, that comes with CS5. I would advice to encode to MPEG2 and Dolby AC3.

please google for tools – there are planty available.
