    David,
    HD DVD is a dead end format – it died 3-4 years ago, and also not valid for SD DVD.

    all you can use is an SD DVD setting.

    David,
    you need to create your own preset. therefor your should start with the plus(+)-button on the right hand side of the settings-tab below, select MPEG2, and set stream usage to SD DVD.

    the elementary-stream-setting you´ve used befor is a generic one, that creating “out-of-spec” MPEGs that wont work with DVD.

    if your source is HD, you will see how horrible SD will look at the end.

    OK Patrick,
    I´ll jump into the bilge….

    #1. dynamic linking is a nice feature, but authoring-tools normally expect encoded assets like elementary m2v- or ac3-streams.

    of course you can use dynamic linking – encore would transcode it as well, but to encode prior authoring is the usual workflow. most professional authoring-tools wont accept any other files.

    using this workflow you´ll get better control about what the encoder is really doing.

    #2.
    a single DVD-5 could contain approx. nearly 120min. video- and audio-content, depending the numbers of your audio-tracks and/or bitrate for video/audio.

    if you have only 1 video@4,8Mbit/s (target rate)+ 1 audio-track ac3@192kbit/s, 120min. will fit on the disc.

    if there are more audio-track the duration will be lower.

    but 4.8 is a really bad bitrate in most cases, you should use more than 5Mbit for video.

    a dvd-9 could carry twice as much data of course…..

    for DVD- and/or BD-business 720p60 is the worst format you can use, as it´s no part of the DVD-specs, and if you would like to create a progressive BD you can only go 1080p23.98 or 1080p24 if you would like to use the full resolution of the disc.

    both could not be created out of 720p60 quickly or needs a lot of computer-power to calculate – so you are on a dead end street with it.

    I would never record 720p, if it should go on DVD or BD, or broadcast – it could only be used for internet.

    and back to topic:

    about the colorspace again – using 0-255 will mostly result in bad flickering graphics on tube-TV, in that reason it´s not broadcast-save and allowed.

    indeed most people have flat-TVs (TFT, LCD, LED or plasma) now, but the reference is still an interlaced tube-TV or broadast-reference-monitor where you need to check your DVD.

    by the way: IF you have TO sharp gfx it will result in flicker as well. in that reason high quality gfx needs to bee blured a bit.

    TV-broadcast-gfx could not be handled like internet, computer-gfx or print-gfx.

    TV-colorspace is different to web/gfx.

    while web+print is working within RGB or CMYK – TV is working within YUV-colorspace (which is a part of the RGB-colorspace)

    you need to work within RGB-value 16-235. but full color tend to be max 230 on the single color-chanel.

    SD NTSC is the worst TV standart ever made, so there is nothing to talk about.

    thank god, I´m living in PAL-land 😉

    one thing that might be possible is – if you have used 1440×1080 (nativ resolution), which is anamorphic HD1080, what will be interpreted as 1920×1080, than it´s possible that your downscaling will result like this.

    what´s your original source? HDV or AVCHD? HDV definitly is 1440×1080 and AVCHD could be 1440×1080 depending on your recoding-setting within your cam.

    according to DVD-spec, the layer 0 only needs to be bigger than layer 1 – it should not be as near as 4.1GB, this doesn´t matter.

    AND: you can´t prepare the layout of the disc within encore. that´s only possible with DVD Studio pro or other applications.

    but this isn´t correct!

    ALL DV-derivates, like DV, DVCAM or DVCPRO 25 and 50 are lower first within PAL.

    but all others codecs normally have upper first, and this is opposite to mostly what happens with all NTSC-codecs.

    and of course you shouldn´t forget that all HD-formats are upper first (also DVCPRO HD).

    so IF you go need to create a PAL-DVD you should allways use the field-order of your original material.

    there is NO sentence within the DVD-specs that DVD must be lower first, but I know some encoders+authoring-tools (like encore) is suggesting that.
