If they are just reference files then try dropping the datarate
Example – Average Datarate 750Kb/s, Max 1500Kb/s, and see how you go – it’s difficult to say without knowing what your footage is like how low you can go.

Ah, as you mentioned compressor I assumed you were on the Mac.
On Windows you could consider Procoder or Episode, both are excellent. Or CinemaCraft standalone if you have the time to invest in learning it.

I try and avoid AVI unless it’s DV AVI.

Sorenson no. compressor on the other hand has far superior scaling and deinterlacing options, but these can increase your transcode time hugely.
You might want to look at Cinemacraft for compressor for the ultimate.
