compressor is one of the best software transcoders out there (ignoring Quicktime’s H.264 implementation). The only other one to look at is Episode, or for the ultimate in MPEG-2 output look at cinemacraft for compressor.

I’ll probably get accused of trolling and sorry for hijacking the thread, but what’s the point of spending as much on a PC as you do on a Mac (notice it’s not uppercase) and then spending loads of time getting it setup just right when you could just get a Mac that is set up perfectly out of the box, and then run Windows on it? It’s a well known fact that Apple makes the best Windows PC.

x264 is the open source version of H.264:

It’s what Handbrake and a load of other free applications use, it’s in constant development by some of the best brains in the business.

x264 is the highest quality H.264 codec out there and it’s seriously fast, and free.

H.264 will play within the flash wrapper and is much higher quality than On2.

Ref QT would certainly be much quicker as part of a workflow but ‘may’ cause issues but it’s rare. If it were me I’d go with ref movies and then trouble shoot as and when.

If you are asking whether you should be using cleaner or compressor, well there is no choice, it has to be compressor. If you had instead asked compressor or episode, I would have said episode, simply because it uses a much, much better H.264 codec. If you are doing large amounts of this work, for a client, it’s a very worthy investment.

Try turning off the ‘Retiming’ and set the output explicity to 25fps. Is your source progressive? If so turn of deinterlacing

If that fails post the Compressor project and preset to https://www.yousendit.com so we can have a look at it.

If you are sure your source is progressive, then change the field dominance settings on compressor to progressive, I think it defaults to TFF.

Only a completely crap DVD player will not pick up a progressive flag.

Why are you interlacing it?

Leave it as progressive if the source is progressive.
