There’s no way they’ll release it at NAB, yes they’ll show the next version of FCP Studio running on it, maybe or even likely on new uber-Macs but NAB is not the place of an OS release, we’ll almost certainly know the exact date by then. There may even be previews of iDVD and iMovie, but I doubt that – it is a broadcast show after all, despite the likes of Avid showing off much less capable but more expensive software packages.

Obviously much depends on the frame differences, but the datarate seems about right.

So about 9.5Mb/s – At what frame size & what frame rate?

Yes it is a kind of compression but it’s not the whole story..

For example HDV uses 4:2:0 but is compressed with Long-GOP MPEG-2.

    Additionally
    There is uncompressed 4:4:4
    There is H.264 at 4:4:4
and there is PhotoJPEG at 4:4:4
    etc.

All the above will have different datarates and visual quality.

Actually 4:4:4 means no colour sub-sampling – It’s a chroma profile, not really a measurement of compression.

As far as I know – under 90% is 4:2:2 and above 90% is 4:4:4.

When it comes to Windows Media support on the Mac platform, nobody has got anything to brag about.

The fact that Episode supports VC-1 output on the Mac platform is something for the company to be proud of, as nobody else comes close, along with the fact that Microsoft has dropped all development of Windows Media Player for the Mac and recommends, infact links to, Flip4Mac as the alternative.

Sure, one could boot into Windows using Bootcamp and fire up WME, but most embarrising for that encoder is that you need to delve into the registry or use an unsupported ‘Powertoy’ to access the advanced encoding features. Other than that it

Rich, with all due respect, and as much as I love cleaner, Thommo did express and interest in WMV encoding and he gives the impression that he’s only using a Mac.

Like I said, with Episode, there’s no contest.

On the Mac, there is no contest.

discreet could have built this and didn’t and are not going to.
Microsoft could have built this and haven’t and are very unlikely to.
    Digital rapids can.
    Anystream can and should.
Apple can and should, but probably won’t.
    Telestream can and should

Rhozet are in the best position to pull it off, they need jolly good a UI designer though – and I just so happen to know a really good one…

Too many of us grew up with Media Cleaner Pro and miss it.

For me, to be the best encoding application, I want:

    MPEG-2 quality from Pro/carboncoder
Sub-pixel motion adaptive deinterlacing (auto-detects film and video source)
    Motion adaptive noise reduction
    Advanced keyframe-able colour correction
    Letterboxing/de-letterboxing
    Quality watermarking options
Dynamic previews like cleanerXL but done properly
3GP encoding quality from Nextreaming/Xenon – whatever they are called today
The visual cropping window from Cleaner for mac
