The Flash encoder can kick out good quality output, however I’m not sure about its scaling or deinterlacing abilities.
As for being divisable by 8, that should be on both axis e.g. 384×288, 320×240, 416×312.

See the post below called “400×300 FLV Not right?” – it maybe that you are sauffering from the frame size not being divisable by 8.
What product are you using for encoding?

Err nothing to do with PAR or frame aspect ratio (400×300 is quite obviously 4:3) but absolutely to do with what I thought were some of the basics of compression i.e. adhearing to a frame size divisable by 8×8 (or 16×16) macroblocks.
I’ve done my own tests and can see a difference between a non-div 8 frame size and a div 8 frame size. I just want to better understand why so many seem to be ignoring the fundimentals.

The DVD Studio Pro manual and installed help files should have all the answers you need including all the dialogue normalisation.

It most certainly is not unique to the .mov extension!
There’s:
.mp4
.m4v
.ts
.mov
.avi
etc.Anyway, as far as I know there is no way to put H.264 content into an AVI on a Mac, thank goodness. AVI is a can of worms, the world would be a better place without it.

I’m gonna have to back off here (BetaSP to D1 to AVID DV to QuickTime MPEG-2 spells trouble to me), rest assured, you’re not the only one who’s pulling their hair out over this.
The one last thing I’d try is to not perform any cropping and export the clip from the Avid ‘as is’, see if Compressor can detect it correctly and do the right thing.

5Mb/s VBR should certainly produce good looking results from BetaSP.
Just to make sure, have you applied any de-interlacing, cropping or scaling during the encode?
How have you captured the BetaSP source – (What setting & CODEC in FCP?) what hardware etc

You say that it’s from an uncompressed NTSC source – what was this shot on? What tape format etc?

What’s your source format? (DV, HDV, HDCAM etc)

One thiing is for sure – it’s nothing to do with the size of the file, however there is a possibility that it’s due the the datrate being too high.
What Quicktime CODECs have you tried (audio and video)?
