  • Ah, OK.

An export from Quicktime is not the best transcode workflow. Compressor should give you good results, what settings have you tried?

Is your source 1080i or 720p?

Digigami could possibly have the tool(s) for you:

  • This question gets asked a lot!

The one main reason that Apple has such great looking clips is that they have access to much higher quality source material than most people get access to. It’s usually only a few steps away from the film source or is close to uncompressed 1080p 4:4:4, HDCAM SR etc.. If deinterlacing is necessary then they use the highest quality settings, not simply dropping or blending fields like most tend to do.

Next thing is that they are unlikely to use a simple QuickTime export. Compressor is probably used and I hear that they still use Autodesk cleaner for some tasks (cropping and scaling?). It’s possible that they do some sort of segment re-encoding if necessary.

The guys working on these trailers are very experienced, know how to colour correct and generally make stuff look and sound great.

If you had access to much higher quality source than your Sony can output then you can get pretty close to the quality Apple get, using Compressor or Episode.

Surely not THE Jeff Raskin, the man who developed the Macintosh!?!

Are you transcoding using Squeeze on the Mac or the PC?

I’m sure that Apple Automator would be able to do something for you.
It might be worth checking/asking here:

January 11, 2008 at 1:30 pm in reply to: How does DV 4:1:1 translate to Mpeg 4:2:0

    Great question Devin.

AFAIC it really comes down to the method and equipment used to do the transcoding. Less sophisticated solutions may not perform any kind of subsampling and as such will produce errors.

Sadly most manufacturers do not make public what methods (linear, nearest neighbour etc) they employ to do this kind of calculation.

Ultimately going from 4:1:1 to 4:2:0 is bad as it will effectively result in 4:1:0. It is better, if possible, to go from 4:1:1 to 4:2:2 (eg DVCPRO50 & DVCPRO HD) and then to 4:2:0.

Those in Europe can rest assured that PAL DV is 4:2:0, the same as MPEG-2, so we don’t have to worry about such matters unless we need to deal with NTSC DV!

  • It’s not an easy process and I’m not sure it’s even possible to do on the Mac OS.

There are many, many threads on the subject over at Doom9, a search there will bring up a ton of results.

I’d be very interested to know where you heard that.

    Did you try it?

    Did it introduce artefacting?

Please share your experiences with the forum.
