I’m exporting a FCP file to MPEG2 through compressor. I use fastest encode, (one pass), but hen I watch it on the DVD, the fades are all pixelly. What gives and how can I fix it?

Simple, use the High quality preset, only use ‘fast’ for ‘drafts’ and testing.

I have heard that doing a 2 pass compression adds artifacting, though

I’d be very interested to know where you heard that.

    Did you try it?

    Did it introduce artefacting?

there are several posts in the cow that discuss the inferiority of compressor’s VBR. I’ve been using compressor for 2 years and abandoned VBR’s in the first month after hours of troubleshooting the pixelation i was getting and then finally reading about it here.

i just tried it again with the bit rates set to the defaults of average – 6.2 and max 7.7 and took a screen grab of the pixelated transition. not sure if/how I can post that here tho… i can email it if you like.

In any case, compressor is a piece of crap in my opinion and we’re looking into buying episode. it’s by far the best encoder i’ve tested.

    experience is tough teacher
    she gives the test first
    and the lesson afterwards
