I guess the simplest method is to never shut down your workstation. The only time I do that is if Windows forces me to re-boot or it has a panic.

Yup,
Provide us with much more information, and/or search this forum. HD to SD workflow with FCP has been covered loads and loads and loads of times.
We can’t really guess at what HD format have, what other software you are using, what you’ve already tried, what was wrong with what you tried, and what SD format you are trying to end up with.

I’m not sure on this but I’d suggest that as the DV codec is tied to the Matrox hardware, that’s the reason why its not available to the encoder. Best check with Canopus or Matrox

IMHO, Microsoft are only doing this because Silverlight hasn’t made even the smallest dent in the popularity and penetration of Flash, that and the fact that H.264 is superior to WMV/VC-1

ProRes is a very high quality Codec. You must have something set incorrectly for it to do that.

To avoid recompressing the 1st part it’s fairly trivial to stitch the two parts together and add the audio parts in Quicktime pro, just don’t expect to be able to perform anything too sophisticated even though it is considerably more powerful than most people give it credit for.
To ensure that both parts look the same, you’ll need to compress the 2nd part to the same MP4 setting as you used for the first part.

What do you mean by that? – ProRes shouldn’t ruin anything.
