I keep going back and forth over what to spend my money on, read reviews and watched videos, most of the fingers seem to point at the 7D. I just don’t want to find myself at the point in a year or so where I start to think i’ve made the wrong choice with a 60D (something which i’ve read others thinking). They just don’t seem as indestructible or ‘pro’, and although i’m not a pro as yet i’m looking at it being an investment over the long-ish term.

The articulated screen is a great feature though, I must admit that it’s the feature which has me going back to look at the 60D again!

I keep on deciding to just go and buy a 7D but then think ‘but that extra £500 would be worth it’, and then think ‘but I haven’t got that extra £500’, it’s certainly a conundrum!

I’ve just acquired some proper old vintage lenses though and was wondering what people think of them, they cost me £30 for the lot (off my girlfriend’s mum).

– Yashica ML Zoom 42-75mm 1:3.5-4.5
– Super Paragon PMC Auto Zoom 28-50mm 1:3.5-4.5
– Yashica DSB 50mm 1:1.9
– Super Paragon PMC Auto Zoom 80-200mm 1:3.8

I’d have to get an adaptor but what kind of performance would I expect to get with either of the Canons?
I’ve had a play with the cameras that they came with (Yashica FX-2 and Yashica 107 MultiProgram) and they appear to be pretty sharp (especially the 200m and 28-50mm).

Could I instantly be saving myself money or am I being a bit too hopeful?

Craig – Yes I compared the 60D, 7D and 5D and there doesn’t seem to be that much difference between them all, mainly the sensor size. I’m not ‘starting out’ as such, but i’ve only used dedicated video cameras rather than DSLRs before so it’s a new world for me.

Fred – My use would be generally short films / music videos intended for the web and DVD, which would suggest that the 7D is the way to go. However if there’s a chance of a cinema release then i’ll be more than willing to sell my own mother in order to raise funds for a 5D!!!!

Fantastic, thanks a lot. I’ve done one H.264 but the other was from SD DV tape so just used the direct to YouTube function of FCP X. Incidentally does the H.264 format make such SD video better quality?
