    Hi

I’m trying to upload a couple of ProRes 422 HQ videos to YouTube, but after waiting literally over night for them to go up it now says that they must be prepared for internet streaming, thus they’re not uploaded. They are .mov files and being new to Macs i’m a little confused. It was stated that my videos must be Pro Res 422 HQ, it’s the rules! FCP X seems to have done away with the Quicktime Conversion / Fast Start solution which YouTube says to use.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

No you’re not supposed to upload ProRes files to Youtube. ProRes is mastering/editing format and not suitable for web distribution. You should make high quality H.264 files instead and upload those to Youtube.

Simply from Export Movie change current settings to H.264 and upload that to Youtube. Or you can compress to H.264 and upload to Youtube straight from Share menu by choosing Youtube.

Fantastic, thanks a lot. I’ve done one H.264 but the other was from SD DV tape so just used the direct to YouTube function of FCP X. Incidentally does the H.264 format make such SD video better quality?

    Cheers

Well H.264 is the best quality format for web distribution. It maintains great picture quality with relatively low bitrates. So I’d say always when you’re uploading videos to some sites you should upload those as H.264.

If you want to get even higher quality H.264 you can first export as ProRes from FCPX and then took file to Compressor and manually compress H.264 with higher bitrate than what standard H.264 export from FCPX uses.

No, no, no! FCPX and compressor do not use mainconcept H.264 encoded. It’s notorious for being bad. You’ll get better results uploading prores but it takes way longer. All you’re doing is giving youtube more data to encode.
