Yes, it would be nice if they labeled them but at least they have two segments. If you know what they are then they are at least somewhat useful.

October 26, 2010 at 12:27 am in reply to: Good solid state portable recorder for hpx170While many users have had fine luck recording into their laptops with FCP or On Location or using a Focus Enhancements recorder, in the heat of production, especially long form event in a foreign country, you would be doing yourself a favor to take Michael’s advice, less hassle, fewer pieces of gear to go wrong, lower power requirements.
I have never trusted my work to recording to a laptop. I was one of the first to Beta test Focus’ first recorder for the HVX200 and I didn’t trust it then and I still don’t trust it for MY applications. P2 cards have never let me down, they are relatively bulletproof.

Wow, that looks really sweet. I have visited their shop in Hollywood, they are nice guys and take care of you after the sale.
I have a separate slider, but it is nowhere near 6′ long. FWIW, I think that this is probably a pretty good product. They stole the weight bucket idea from the competing Hollywood Micro Jib, for travel, the weight bucket idea is perfect. When I travel with my jib, I just go to a local wall mart to buy some weights or improvise and use whatever I can hang from the back of the arm but the weight bucket is a better solution.
I don’t think I will sell my Traveller to get one of these. I have used their dolly system with the rubber railing and it is just okay, I still much prefer traditional track over the rubber tubing. The slider is nice but I rarely need a slider that is 6′ long, I do fine with my 24″ slider. But this looks to be a nice system.

The first bar in the audio meters is -20dB, the second is -12dB.
I agree, the color of the warnings on the sound meters leaves a little to be desired. I miss real VU meters like I had on my Betacam but nothing uses those anymore.

Each 64GB P2 card gives you 168 minutes of recording at 720 24pN. If you are too busy to download while shooting, two 64GB P2 cards is giving you 5.6 hours of storage. If you had three of them, you could shoot for longer than an eight hour day.
I would purchase three or four 64 GB cards per camera or rent them if you cannot afford to buy them over using some outboard recorder. Outboard recorders are much less reliable, require extra power and are generally a PITA.
Simple solution. Almost all of this video gear works fine on 220/240 50MHz power, you just buy some plug adapters.

I own and use the Traveler and love it. What is the Explorer? I suppose I will have to go look at the Losmandy site?

October 21, 2010 at 6:25 pm in reply to: Redheads and Blondes – any lower wattage bulbs available? Not sure which country you are in Harry, but according to the Ianiro website, you can purchase all kinds of smaller wattage bulbs for the 800 but not for the 2k version.
The lamp socket is known as R7s 80mm for the 800, R7s 93mm for the 1k version and R7s 140mm for the 2k version. The specs for the smaller wattage lamps are here https://www.ianiro.com/redhead_fibre_ita-asp.php scroll down to the lamp chart.
Any reliable vendor that sells bulbs will have them, https://www.bulbtronics.com , probably https://www.filmtools.com , if you are here in the U.S. etc. If you are in Australia or the UK, I am sure that there are equivalent pro line retailers.

Hi Thom:
Glad you found the article helpful. I have been shooting with my HPX170 since that article was written two years ago and I have been continually impressed with it. FWIW, I also shoot the RED One on occasion, the HPX300 and the HPX2700 and I own a 5D MKII as well. One of my clients owns three of the EX1s, so when I shoot for them, I shoot the Sony. After all of this experience with various types and levels of HD cameras, I still feel that the HPX170 is an outstanding camera, I truly love mine.
FWIW, in the past two years, I have billed out $28,560.00 in rentals in my production fees with the 170 so it has paid for itself handsomely and made me a lot of profit. I shot a spot at Staples Center yesterday with it with the LA Clippers, which looks beautiful. I can’t post grabs from that until it airs but I also shot two PBS Specials with it, (The Legendary Bing Crosby and an upcoming Andy Williams Special), a film last year that premiered at the IMAX Theater in Copenhagen during the COP 15 Climate Summit and lots of docs and corporate pieces as well. P2 is rock solid and DVCPRO HD, while not the most modern codec on the market, still looks superb.
Cheers,
