  • If it helps, here is what a good majority of my e-mails have looked like for the past couple of days. https://gallery.me.com/blfilms/100139

    Thanks,

  • Couldn’t delete the Mail prefs because Mail keeps all of your mailboxes folders (I have about fifty of them) and e-mails within the Mail.plist file. Some apps do this and some don’t. Unfortunately for me, Mail does.

  • Hi:

I know it is probably not a virus but so far, nobody on four boards and the Apple Forum has ever heard of this happening. Weird.

For maintenance, I run Mac Janitor once a week, repair permissions once a week and do a full backup to two separate drives once a week using SuperDuper.

I guess I could go back to one of the backups I did over the weekend but yeesh, that will take about 5 hours to restore and it may develop again

    Thanks,

    Dan

  • I wish a restart of Mail would make this go away, but it doesn’t. Very obnoxious. Is it possible this could be a result of that rarest of species, an actual OSX virus?

  • Hi BJ:

I am open to trying anything to get this resolved. I will check out OnyX and will report back on what it tells me or does.

    Thanks,

  • Me too, I have never seen or experienced this issue either.

I posted on the Apple forum this morning, will let you all know if I discover a fix.

    Thanks!

  • I’ll keep this solution in mind Scott, but I am pretty stubborn when it comes to fixing issues like this. I want to know why it happened, how it happened, the root cause and how to solve it.

Think I may have to make an appointment with a genius at an Apple store and grill them on what is going on. It is their program.

I have a feeling it is a corrupted font possibly, I am trying some ideas out and have found some correlation between switching the prefs>fonts and colors to other fonts. It doesn’t stop the issue but when I highlight Arial, it switches once fine. Then I tried Arial bold and it worked fine. Switch back to Arial and in the prefs dialog, the sample where it should say Arial goes to all small boxes with As in them. I tried removing Arial and another more recently installed new font from the font folder but that didn’t solve it.

    Thanks for the recommendation.

  • That’s a good suggestion Michael, I’ll give it a try.

    Matthew:

This is an FCP board. Most people here will tell you to buy FCP.

Go over to the AVID section and most people will tell you to buy an AVID.

Go over to the CS5 section and most people will tell you to buy CS5.

For some reason, people have a religious zealotry about their editing software of choice, but I don’t. Any of the three will work for what you are editing, the choice is up to you. Do your research and buy whichever suits your needs and preferences the best.

I too have used both and I too have been pondering whether or not to invest in the Chimera. The big difference that may not be apparent to you is not the light source or quality of light, it is the control of the light. Every time I rig a China ball, I also end up rigging about 4-6 40″ C-stand arms and about thirty linear feet of Duvetine to make a skirt for the ball so that the light only stays on the talent, not on the walls and surrounding area. The Chimera elegantly sidesteps this major issue with it’s built-in skirts, which can be rolled down and Velcro fastened at whichever level is appropriate.

If you are doing shots where the natural fall off won’t light your walls or other things you don’t want to light, you can’t beat the cost, weight and ease of purchase of a regular China Ball. I have two of them with the ceramic dual pin socket and 650 watt quartz bulb. They work well, but can be a PITA to rig.

I am saving for a large Chimera, I already own five other Chimeras so I might as well own a pancake lantern. Oh, yeah, we didn’t talk about that. A 30″ China Ball doesn’t work very well for location work with 8′ ceilings, does it? That is the other recommendation, I would suggest the Chimera Pancake lantern over the Chimera China Ball. The China Ball is great when in studio or where you have higher ceilings but for practical locations, the Pancake Lantern will save you and your gaffer a lot of headaches. Been there, done that. 30″ China Balls are close to useless with low ceilings.
