  • DVCPROHD 720 24pN footage edited in a DVCPRO50 Anamorphic Sequence?

    Hi all:

What am I doing wrong? Shot DVCPROHD720 24pN. Client doesn’t care about HD output, wants SD widescreen DVD and widescreen QT H.264 for their website. I edit in the DVCPRO50 Anamorphic time line, all is good. This is fun, I can re-frame and zoom in to turn a single camera shoot into a two camera looking sequence. I know, old hat for pro editors but a new way of editing for me, I usually just shoot ProRes422 or DVCPRO HD and edit in the same.

Output a QT. It shows up as 720 x 480 in properties but when opened, it displays in 16:9 QT window and looks good. So I assume that this 720 x 480 QT must carry the anamorphic flag? So how come when I convert it using Compressor, Visual Hub or bring it into iDVD, it outputs as 4×3 squeezed? I haven’t worked in SD for years and thought I understood anamorphic SD and how to deal with it pretty well but evidently I don’t.

I get smart and try outputting it as 852 x 480 from Compressor, then it looks correct, opens in a 16:9 QT window, but it is aliased, like there is a fine screen over the picture. So I am obviously doing something incorrectly, but I don’t know what. How can I turn this 720 x 480 QT from FCP into a 720 x 480 anamorphic QT H.264 for the client? How can I bring in a 16:9 clip for iDVD? I start a widescreen 16:9 iDVD project, menu is 16:9 but the video clips show as 4×3 vertically squeezed, which is no good. When I input the 852 x 480 QT, it is noticeably aliased looking, not terrible but not right either.

    Help! and thanks.

Try 720×405. But when you go to a computer deliver you have to go square pixel and I keep the wide the same and reduce to height to fit.

That’s a good suggestion Michael, I’ll give it a try.

Your dv50 sequence is 23.98, right?

Try dropping your QT into Anamorphicizer so your iDVD can recognise it as widescreen.
(although, the fact that it shows up 4:3 in Compressor is a bit odd)

    I would not edit SD.

    Shoot and edit in HD.
Output final program making a ref file as “Current Settings”
Drop that file into compressor and compress to your final needs.
    web
    dvd
    etc.

This will yield your best looking SD widescreen video.

Chris, that is not the issue here (I bet Dan knows that anyway).
The issue is why the QT clip is behaving the way it is behaving.

We should respond in case we’ve got something to contribute to solve the problem / issue.

Addressing other issues (that might net even be an existing issue) is only going to distract from real problem and probably annoy the person asking for advice.
