Try plugging your computer into a different power source (plug). I’ve had a strange intermittent “fan surge” problem (noisy fan), when plugged into a UPS. Changing the power source resolved the problem.

One better answer to this problem is to activate the “project media” tab, then highlight the event, right click, then push “i” (select project media list). This action causes the Project Media Display to jump to the highlighted event, in the project media list. This display does show the date/time stamp.
This is not ideal, but fewer clicks than the above method.
Is there a faster way to access these event date/time stamps?

I ended up switching the Firewireless laptop for another with Firewire (and an expresscard slot). I did not see any viable way to capture HDV without Firewire.
I was surprised to see Firewire disappearing from current laptops.
This is not my primary editor, but I do want to have the capability of capturing HDV when remote.

I assume that you have 2 internal drives. Let one run the OS (win7), exclusively. Let the other be the scratch drive (set temp drive in your Vegas options).
If you have two external drives, let one contain all of your projet’s source footage. Let the other be the destination of the rendered project.
This may prevent the system from choking on the demanding work load.

If you haven’t yet, try separating the render task through 4 drives to prevent a bottleneck: OS, scratch(temp), source, destination.
Also, set dynamic ram to 512 or 1024 and threads to 8 (or even the max of 16).

I have also seen the mysterious “black frames” appear, from time to time, when rendering. Often at the same spot. But, I also do not get them consistently, so I cannot reproduce the problem.

I cannot speak to 32-bit Vegas9c, but I have had increased render success with Veg9c-64(on very complex projects) by setting the threads to the max (16) and running 4 seperate drives (OS + scratch + source + destination). Might be worth a try for you, too.

I have 8 gigs of ram on an i7.
The max 16 threads should make no difference on a system that perceives itself as an 8 core, but it seems to. In my case, it works, so I stick with it.
Nor, do I understand the relationship between Dynamic Ram setting and rendering. But, I do seem to get different rendering behavior with different Dynamic Ram settings. In my case, rendering to Avid’s HD codec DNxHD-145, I find that the settings of 16/1024 work. Other settings, I have had less luck with. It may be codec dependent, but it may be worth a try for you.
And, as mentioned before, I have found it very helpful (higher render success rate) by using 4 drives.

Try setting the “threads” to the max: 16. On my i7 I have my Dynamic Ram at 1024.
I have had much better luck using 4 drives: 1 for OS, 1 for “temp/scratch”, 1 for source, 1 for destination.
