    Also, for what it’s worth, I am using RAID-5 (three drives configured RAID-5 via Windows XP). I know hardware RAID is supposed to give the best performance, but using the Windows “software” RAID appears to work just fine for me.

    Troy,

    Unfortunately, I believe there are two bottlenecks. Below are my images. See the thread mentioned above at VirtualDub.org for my hardware config. Two items that jump out at me on your images: disk write speed and CPU usage. I’m no expert, so maybe someone more experienced can chime in here to confirm or clarify.

    Looking at the 8 Bit YUV -> HDTV 720 fps -> Disk Write: I believe this needs to be quite a bit higher. Assuming you were capturing uncompressed 720p, this should be at LEAST 60 – but that would be borderline. You are compressing, so you could probably get by with a little less – but not much.

    At the CPU usage: You are showing 97%, so you are pretty much maxed out.

    Good luck,
    Dale

    Troy,

    What resolution are you attempting to capture (720p? 1080i?)?

    What type of storage/hard drive system are you saving to (IDE? SATA? RAID-5?)?

    What are the results (post a screen shot) of your Blackmagic Disk Speed Test? To run this app, at least on my computer, it is located in the Start menu under Blackmagic Design -> Intensity group.

    When you start the capture, what are the stats displayed in VirtualDub (CPU usage, Video -> average rate, data rate, compression rate, ..)?

    Troy,

    Take a look at these two threads on the VirtualDub forums. I’m using VirtualDub (32-bit), Huffyuv (version in the first thread), and capturing at 720p.

    Chris – What type of connectivity do you use to the Intensity Pro? HDMI or component? I have the Intensity Pro (older, HDMI only) and use it for Xbox 360 recording.

    I have forgotten in the past that it is capturing and would start something with HDCP enabled (Netflix, Zune, …) and the card would cut out and quit capturing (and it should, because of the HDCP). I simply went to System Restore (in Windows) and rolled back to the latest snapshot and it fixed it.

    Tony,

    I’m not familiar with the Shuttle, but I would assume so. Definitely component from the PS3 to the Shuttle.

    Tony,

    The PS3 uses HDCP (copy protection) over HDMI, so I don’t think you are going to have any luck capturing via HDMI. If you want to capture HD PS3 output, you will have to use component.

  • When I try to change the WMV frame rate to 23.976, I get this error:

    “The custom template you selected is not valid with the current project settings. It has been removed from the template list.”

    But I obviously can’t set the project settings to 24p. Any idea how to get it to allow me to render with these settings?

    I can’t reproduce that error. Maybe one of the Vegas guru’s around here can help with that, or try searching for that error string on Google.

  • So here I would be going from 24p->30p->24p, right? Does anyone know if this will actually result in the original frame rate as shot, or how to do so? I believe Handbrake is just an ffmpeg or mencoder wrapper. Are we talking about telecining and detelecining here, or something else?

    Adam,

    No telecining or detelecining. Just convert to mp4 with x264. But here is an easier solution…

    I just downloaded the trial of Vegas HD. You can render as WMV which allows you to customize all the settings on the Video tab:

    Image size = (Custom)
    Width = 1920
    Height = 1080
    Pixel aspect ratio = 1
    Frame rate = 24

  • Adam,

    Render it from Vegas as an uncompressed .avi or .mov, then encode it with Handbrake – https://handbrake.fr/
