  • Best way to post 1080/24p content from Vegas HD 9.0c to YouTube?

    Posted by Adam Kessel on April 18, 2010 at 11:27 pm

    My Canon EOS 7D shoots 1920×1080 at 24p.

    I am looking for the simplest, highest quality way to post that video to YouTube in that format (edited with Vegas Movie Studio HD 9). I don’t care about long rendering time. In other words, I am trying to post 1920×1080 / 24p directly from Vegas to YouTube.

    There doesn’t seem to be any configuration on the “YouTube Upload” option other than “Normal” and “Higher” quality. Also, in “Project Properties,” there doesn’t appear to be any Frame Rate of 23.976 or 24 — only 15, 25, or 29.976.

    Am I missing something? Am I better off rendering to another file type first, rather than using the built-in YouTube upload feature? Also, is there any way to tell on YouTube whether a video is 24p, 30p, or something else?

    Thanks for any replies!

    Vegas Movie Studio HD 9 does not support 24p. Not in the project properties or rendering templates. You’ll need to upgrade to Vegas Pro if you want 24p support.

    I don’t have Movie Studio HD but I would just try it and see. Only you can determine if you like the results. I use the Sony AVC encoder for my YouTube videos and I’m very happy with the results.

    No need to tell it anything. YouTube will get the frame rate directly from the stream that you upload.

    That’s too bad! Apparently I didn’t do enough diligence before buying HD 9. I’m really just a casual user so I can’t justify shelling out $500 for this one feature. Can anyone think of a workaround? For example, is there some high-quality/uncompressed format I could render to and then use mencoder or ffmpeg to convert to 24p? I’m a little hazy on what is set in the container versus codec versus elsewhere.

    Adam,

    Render it from Vegas as an uncompressed .avi or .mov, then encode it with Handbrake – https://handbrake.fr/

    So here I would be going from 24p->30p->24p, right? Does anyone know if this will actually result in the original frame rate as shot, or how to do so? I believe Handbrake is just an ffmpeg or mencoder wrapper. Are we talking about telecining and detelecining here, or something else?

    Adam,

    No telecining or detelecining. Just convert to mp4 with x264. But here is an easier solution…

    I just downloaded the trial of Vegas HD. You can render as WMV which allows you to customize all the settings on the Video tab:

    Image size = (Custom)
    Width = 1920
    Height = 1080
    Pixel aspect ratio = 1
    Frame rate = 24

    I just downloaded the trial of Vegas HD. You can render as WMV which allows you to customize all the settings on the Video tab:

    When I try to change the WMV frame rate to 23.976, I get this error:

    “The custom template you selected is not valid with the current project settings. It has been removed from the template list.”

    But I obviously can’t set the project settings to 24p. Any idea how to get it to allow me to render with these settings?

    I can’t reproduce that error. Maybe one of the Vegas guru’s around here can help with that, or try searching for that error string on Google.

    It turns out this very post is the only relevant place this error turns up in a Google search!

    Hi John,

    I did a small clip test from a wedding using the Sony AVC,Internet 16×9 HD 30p. Is this the one you use? Here is the link

    What do you think?

    Thanks In advance
