    But you can’t just put P2 into a PCMCIA slot and use it as is?

    What is the point of making it PCMCIA?

    The P2 cards are in the PCMCIA form factor. If you have a laptop, insert the P2 card in the side and your done. It’ll show up as a disk. drag the file where you want it to go and thats it.

    One thing I’m impressed with here in the Pana design is this compatibility. PCMCIA is wide spread and cheap

    not sure this is appropriate but if the clips are in a separate cpature bin and not in the main project bin they will not be seen by the FRC plugin, they need to be at the top level.

    yeah I agree with the red being overly saturated even after a neutral chart setup. Interestingly I see normal reds while shooting and they really pop up in the grade, and we have to secondarily wind them out. Anyone else find that? I don’t mind too much, but I like to get a closer setup to shoot with so that I can light more accurately. I think I even pumped more red into a few shots in the hope of getting more saturated. Should’ve seen thhose ones! eek.

    Are you talking about on an HD progressive monitor or in the HD viewfinder on the Varicam? At 25FPS and 180? there is no difference in motion blur or length of exposure to shooting on 35mm on the same settings. The apparent sharpness of HD edge to edge can make this appear worse. But mostly what is viewed as shudder is due to seeing a 25FPS image played back progressively at 25FPS on a monitor or the viewfinder. In post when the material eventually becomes interlaced and becomes 50Hz the persistence of vision will create a smoother feel. 25Hz is not a fast enough frequency to fool the eye into seeing smooth motion.

    it is somthing that has to be gotten used to as a DP working with these progressive cameras at 24/25FPS, but otherwise panning rates should be similar to those chosen for 35mm shooting. I would suggest shooting a test and taking it through your post process to see the effects of pans and shuddering once transferred to it’s finishing format.

    you should be able to set it up under any light balanced to the camera setting, although I found that after setting up the chart on Tungsten, I got better results matching two cameras under daylight sources.

    I think rigorous measurement of the light source with a colour meter and matching that to the camera settings is the way to go, I think that the tungsten lamps I had used were a little warm.

    Also definitely make sure you have a waveform monitor that can present a parade dispaly so that you can correct each channel’s black levels and gamma.

    You’ll just have to be careful with flicker from power supplies, but as before, the Varicam does allow you to see the flicker as you shoot so you can dial it out if it’s a problem by adjusting the shutter one way or another.

    Do you see the image brighten when you switch off the shutter? If the shutter was on and set to 180? then it should brighten by a stop when switched off. This should give you the visual cue that it is now at 360?. You will need to see something move in shot to really get a feel for it.

    we use 172.8 when shooting at 25FPS here for our power frequency.

    Switching the shutter off is effectively selecting 360?

    Oh sorry, I didn’t really answer your main question:

    Opening the shutter to 250 or so would create a longer exposure, leading to more motion blur. Opening all the way to 360degrees (switching the shutter off effectively) creates a very blurred look. When I first saw this it took me a moment to realise that I wasn’t looking at something in slow-motion. But it was in sync. An interesting look for an effect. I always wanted to use it for something, but the opportunity hasn’t come up yet and I have noticed that until directors are more used to seeing these effects, they aren’t included in their toolset, and so take some persuasion to try them out. I think it would look great for a fight scene, where someone ‘s arm swings around. it would streak nicely.
