Checking my FCP with my BM card installed there are Varicam Blackmagic 720P 25 10Bit setups.

I have worked on a series that was rejected on overseas sales (to the US) specifically because it was aquired on the Varicam, the reason being cited was the 720P format being too “low resolution” and the minimum being required for aquisition 1920×1080.

Frustrating after a lot of hard work and nice results. The footage was graded and mastered at 1080 and personally looked better than Sony HDCAM but there seems to be a specific requirement popping up that disallows 720P aquisition contractually by some broadcasters.

I’ve just been importing P2 media from an HVX202 at 1080i50 (25P shot). I transferred the P2 through my G4 laptop to a firewire 800 drive and then imported into FCP off the duplicated files. I found that the files are easily played back in realtime using safe RT in FCP to edit without rendering. Easy-Peasy. So I think you are only really limited by the throughput of your drives. I’d suggest a couple of drives. A media drive to back up your P2 media to as MXF wrapped files, and another perhaps to be your scratch disk for FCP. that way you can reuse your P2 and still have files in two places and not choke your laptop. The DVCproHD files are relatively small.

yeah that totally worked and gave me a chance to figure out the slider control too. Thanks a lot. I’m just starting to get into expressions, but liking them!

Coming orginally from post on 1 inch tape I used to always shoot 30 seconds of b&t but this year I’ve slowly been working my way down to less and less. No one seems to mind. At least not yet anyway.
