    Folks,

    I’m digitizing footage for a feature being shot 23.98 on the Varicam. I’m using the HD1200A deck and FCP 5.0.3 via firewire configuration.

    I set everything up exactly according to the system setting document Panasonic has at https://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:bdHNDsNxv-QJ:https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/sales_o/ieee1394/AJ-HD1200AP_FCPHD45.html+dvcpro+hd+system+settings+compatibility&hl=en&client=safari and the Andrew Balis workflow at Ken Stone’s site… but the footage is being logged as 59.94 footage in the browser. When I drag a clip to the sequence, it requires a render to 23.98. When move frame by frame through the clips in the bin, it’s clear that all the duplicated frames are still there.

    Using the FRC converter after capture seems to work fine, but it drops the timecode, which is not an option. We’re really counting on the economy of only storing the 23.98 footage on the drives – the 59.94 file sizes are way to big!

    Am I mistaken, or am I possibly missing something in my understanding that FCP is supposed to toss out the duplicated frames DURING CAPTURE?

    Cinewalt,

    My guess is that you’ve started the capture while the color bars are playing!
    This is a common error resulting in FCP thinking that you have a 59.94 project;
    it turns out that the Varicam always recors color bars at 60 fps (no flags), so
    merely start your capture after the bars have past!

    I just discovered that that was the issue! Now I just wish our DP would give me more pre-roll after the bars so the deck could cue properly…!

    I sometimes wonder why I bother with bars and tone. Nobody uses it, and it screws up firewire capture.

    Coming orginally from post on 1 inch tape I used to always shoot 30 seconds of b&t but this year I’ve slowly been working my way down to less and less. No one seems to mind. At least not yet anyway.

    While the bars themselves are a moot point in digital transfers because the levels are preset and unchangable, the audio tone does help to line up the transfer or capture levels if brought in analog. Also I’ve found it a good idea not to record precious program on the first few turns of tape on a roll as dirt has a way of accumulating there.
