July 5, 2005 at 3:04 pm in reply to: Capturing DVCAM footage on MiniDV camera – am I losing quality ?Something else should be explained though. DVCAM runs at true SMPTE timecode (faster than DV SP). This doesn’t mean you will lose any picture/audio quality, however, if you are ever dumping a D-Beta/Beta SP tape to DV for offlining, you are much better off to dump to DVCAM (you can even use cheap MiniDV tapes) since you can patch the timecode and have an exact T/C match for offline through online editing.

Hey Folks,
I have a Kona SD card and one thing I have noticed lately that seems strange is that the Blackmagic Easy Setup for 8-bit uncompressed uses BMD for capture and the Apple codec for sequences… Is that right??? Shouldn’t the same codec be used throughout?

Hey Charlie,
I would love to help but I haven’t made the upgrade yet… Please tell me how the transition has been? I have a Kona SD/ Dual 2.0ghz G5/4 gigs RAM/X Serve-RAID 1.8T so I am very interested to know what the upgrade has been like for you. Have you cut anything 8-bit Uncompressed? Is there still timeline slowdown with trims etc? Is there improved performance with large projects? Please share your success/horror stories.

Hey Matt – Do you have a DC30 Card installed? I have tried the DC30 PhotoJPEG codec out setting up a PhotoJPEG timeline and changing the effects handling to DC30 but when I throw DV files into the timeline they need to be rendered…
Is there any way to use this codec with a Kona card?

Bill,
Much appreciated! I am surprised you are setting Blackmagic to handle the effects since what I have been told so far is that if you set FCP 4.5 to handle the effects for 8-bit uncompressed the RT is much better. Do you know something I don’t?? Please share. Perhaps you are using a different driver… I am currently using the Blackmagic 4.8 driver.
I am becoming increasingly interested in the DC30 codec that has been in discussion in one of the RT threads on the cow. I want to find someone who has used it with Kona cards. DC30 allows FULL FRAME PhotoJPEG 4:2:2 to access 100% RT instead of FCP’s 35% RT (Apple’s Offline RT codec). Check this out:
https://www.alfanet.it/squared5/dc30xact.html
The guys are saying no DC30 video card is necessary… I need to try it out.
How is the Kona 2 working with FCP 5 so far?

Bill,
Please share your system setup. I am currently using FCP 4.5, Dual 2.0, 4 gigs RAM, Xserve RAID 5+0 1.8T, Kona SD card working strickly in 8-bit uncompressed and having REALLY BAD issues. Very slow edits etc. Are you using a Kona card? Are your settings set for FCP to handle effects or the card and what codec are you using? Have you jumped to FCP 5 and seen a difference?
Please help me out brother.

Hey Guys,
What is this dc30 codec all about?? Is it a 4:2:2? Does it stack up to 8-bit uncompressed? How does it work with Kona SD?

PS – Can a Sysop PLEASE delete those repeated postings? I have no idea how that happened.

Bjorn,
I am having the exact same problem! Have you heard from anyone who has upgraded to FCP 5 whether or not the Bug has been fixed?
I am also seriously considering going back to Avid.

Hey Graeme,
That’s what I was affraid of… The problem I am having now, which is why I was considering using another codec, is that using Blackmagic 8-bit uncompressed leads to larger project files (over 12megs). FCP 4.5 has a really bad bug with large project files which causes stutter/slow down in the timeline when trimming/moving clips. If I start a new project with just a few 8-bit clips in it things move like butter and RT is actually quite good.
I can’t believe Apple let a bug like that go unfixed in 4.5 especially with the push for “professional” moniker with guys like Walter Murch ‘coming out’ in favor of FCP. The move to FCP 5 scares me after reading some of the FCP 5 horror stories on The Cow…

Hey Tim,
I work in 8-bit uncompressed too, but I haven’t made the jump to FCP 5 yet. I am seriously considering it. What other issues have you noticed?
