I’m having the same issue. What I did was take one image and draw a mask on it. I copied that layer and inverted the mask on it. So, I had two layers that had the same mask on them, one normal and one inverted. I put pins within the mask on the normal layer. The inverted mask layer, however, would not allow me to put pins on the visible image because it was outside of the mask. So, even though I selected to invert the mask, After Effects registered that layer as only contained within the mask. It makes sense, but it shouldn’t work this way.
So, I took that inverted mask layer and precomposed it. Then I tried to put pins on the visible image. And that’s when my current up-to-date version of After Effects crashed.
Instead, I’m masking out every piece of the image that I’m applying puppets to and having them all on individual layers, and subtracting all of those masks onto another single layer, so my image appears seamless. This process requires more masks and layers than it should, but produces the results I was looking for.

It would be a nice feature if we could have the option to expand a mask and keep the points. Since we don’t have a Mask Scale in the drop down, it would be nice to have the option to use Mask Expansion and click a box on whether we want it to expand as you describe it or scale as most people seem to want it to do.

Same thing has been happening to me. This week we’ve had two shoots. I reformatted the cards when I put them in the Zooms, and then recorded as normal. I watched the file number counting up in numerical order as we recorded. And then when I transferred them to my project files on the computer, the actual audio in each file does not correspond to the order in which we recorded them. Like the file labeled …-017.wav should actually be …-028.wav.
This is going to make sorting take almost as long as editing these videos!
I would love to hear if anyone figures out why this happens.

It’s one of those days where everything I want to do in After Effects just doesn’t have a simple solution. And here’s another. In FCP 7 I can just use a slider to literally crop the left, right, top, and bottom of an image, video, graphic, whatever. But here in After Effects, those sliders don’t exist under the Transform option within the layer. And that just seems like having them there would be a no-brainer. I know masking things is how a lot of stuff is done in After Effects, but cropping an image shouldn’t be so hard in a program that should be able to do something like that faster than FCP 7.

Not sure if this is what you mean, but I often am cutting interviews and need to merge the same word together or put two totally different thoughts together and make it sound like a single thought/sentence. The main way I do this is scrubbing frame by frame in the audio and making sure it plays smoothly from one clip to the next.
If you ever find that you accidentally turned this off, just press Shift-S to turn frame-by-frame audio scrubbing back on. At least on FCP7 this works. Not sure on X.

July 25, 2012 at 4:49 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro Studio quits on new install on laptopI’m also having a similar problem. Got to work and woke up my computer. There was a dialogue box that popped up and said that the network found another computer on the network with the same name. So, the network or my mac renamed the computer to NAMEOFCOMPUTER (3) instead of NAMEOFCOMPUTER (2).
This normally wouldn’t be a problem, but I am a video editor trying to use Final Cut Studio. And now I can not access any FCS app while connected to the network or I’ll get a message that says:
“Protection Error
This application cannot continue because another application with an identical serial number is already running on another computer on your network.”However, my computer IS the ONLY computer running these applications. So, I imagine the network is seeing my computer before it went to sleep AND the newly renamed copy of my computer as well?
I’m not the IT guy here at work, and unfortunately he is anti-Apple. So, if there’s a solution apart from resetting the network (which involves bumping over a hundred people’s computers off the network/internet), then please let me know!
Thank you for any help.
