I’ve been listening to Blue Soul by the great hard-bop trumpeter Blue Mitchell, who happens to be black….

….as is Miles Davis, who fused east coast bop and west cool on the amazing, ethereal Blue Moods. (Mingus on bass!!)

When in Miles’s band, Bill Evans wrote Blue in Green, my favorite version of which is on this album, whose cover is…

…black.

In other words, I don’t care for either/or. I prefer both. And I prefer the blue background for the Cow.

Of course, I’m not especially manly, so there you go.

I highly recommend the Cow Master Series DVD on Advanced Rotoscoping in After Effects. The author is Pete O’Connell, a film compositor who used AE on films including Stranger Than Fiction (one of my desert island flix), Across the Universe, and the highly acclaimed Transporter 2.

It’s a really wonderful disk — not only informative, but quite entertaining. It’s also our best-selling disk these days. So Pete both feels your pain, and will help you alleviate it.

Sorry for the pitch…but we’ve had a really strong response to the disk. Folks are loving it.

Here are the connections on the HP DreamColor LP2480zx : DisplayPort 1.1, HDMI 1.3, (2) DVI-I, VGA, component, S-video, and composite inputs. I’m running an HP monitor on my Mac as we speak. DVI for now…but only until my new MacBook. 😉

That said, Apple has always been good about providing adapters. That DVI-VGA adapter has saved my life with projectors on the road a TON of times. Even though I’m no longer a road warrior (HALLELUJAH!!), I still have 3 or 4 of ’em rolling around.

Here are some mini-DisplayPort adapters in the Apple Store: from $29 for the regular DVI to $99 for Dual Link.

I probably have a more sinister outlook on the world than any of you, but I’m also a pocket-protector carrying nerd. (Don’t want those DVI-VGA adapters messing up my shirt pockets, yo.) New connections are the way of the world. Buh-bye DVI. Barely had a chance to miss you, HDMI.

That is, *I* have to plan for obsolescence, whether or not my favorite vendors are. I figure any connector is good for 3 years, 5 tops. We’ve been living on borrowed time with DVI. And since I budget about 2 years for a computer, I figure it’ll all line up with my next purchase next year….and I’ll be ready to line it all up again in 5 years or so.

The cool part? “Honey, I HAVE TO HAVE THIS FOR MY JOB!!”

And since we make TV and movies for a living, time to pull the trigger on that Panasonic 103″ plasma. A steal at $70K. Or hold out a little longer for the Panasonic 150 incher, due next year for what they’re saying could be $100K-ish. They showed that at the CES Keynote in 2008. Dude, this thing can show an elephant at FULL SIZE.

HONEEEEEE, I NEED THIS FOR MY JOB!!!

Anyway, for $29.95 plus postage, Apple has your back on the DisplayPort problem.

Thanks, Don. And a great article, regardless. William Powloski is a big fan of the Cow == I found him here, asked him to work with me on something, and he JUMPED. Took all the pictures himself, collected the screen caps, worked with Warner Bros to help me get approvals — all this in the middle of producing 5 episodes at once. A remarkable guy.

The folks at Warner Bros also couldn’t have been more helpful. I’ve never worked with a studio who was even in the ball park.

Just after the magazine shipped, word came from ABC that they weren’t picking up the back 9. It’s not officially canceled, and there are still several episodes to air next year…but it seems unlikely that we’ll see its return. Too bad. Fifteen Emmy nominations last year and 3 wins, could do even better this year.

I’m glad you took a look though. It really is one of my favorites. Be sure to check out the Season 1 DVD set, which has some great behind the scenes stuff, including some bits with our boy William.
