Have you seen iMovie on iPad? It’s amazing. If they can do that, I don’t see that at least a meaningful subset of the new version of Final Cut would be particularly tough.
Of course, they may feel that they already have a meaningful subset of Final Cut on the iPad with iMovie! 🙂

Apple took on much of (all of?) the Combustion team many years ago. I’ve lost track of those guys since then, and have no idea what they’re doing now, but the first product to come out of their new efforts was Motion.
I wouldn’t draw even a single conclusion about FCP X from that, except to say observe that it went even further down the interface redefinition road than Combustion did. In that sense, it might be another glimpse of what Apple is thinking about minimizing the importance of the timeline.
In any case, I agree that it’s quite understandable why Discrete-desk artists are intrigued by what they’ve seen of FCP X so far.

A couple is driving through a town in Texas, called “Mexia.” She thought she heard someone pronounce it Meh-HEY-ah, and he says, no, in this part of the world you hear the X in both “Texas” and “Mexico,” with the emphasis on the first syllable, so it would make sense that it would be pronounced “MECKS-ia.”
After they go back and forth on this for a while, he says, “I’ll pull in here and ask.” So he drives up, rolls down his window, and says, “How do you pronounce the name of this place?” And the girl in the drive-through says “Dayyyy-reeeee Qu-eeeeeeen.”

It’s both simpler and more complicated than that. The same dude is now in charge of both.
That’s typical of how Apple’s acquisitions work. Bring people in to work on their original project (in this case, Ubillos and FCP), then roll them into other roles. It has nothing to do with consumer-izing FCP or other speculation that feels silly to me…although who really knows yet? Instead, it’s a guy who understands video editing, who has ALWAYS tried to do new and interesting things (only Sony Vegas approaches FCP’s combination of compositing and editing in one place) – now he’s in charge of everything video at Apple.
Creative COW Magazine ran an interesting story on this – one of the original developers of LiveType became the manager of FXPlug, and left to create some of the bestselling business apps in the iTunes store (the first of which was AirShare). Check it out.
In the meantime, no matter how insanely pro FCP X winds up being, grabbing iMovie is great advice.
