Yes you can, but how much time you spend on it will make it or not. Another guy at work just did something like this in Nuke for a feature we have in right now. It’s a 340 frame shot. I can tell you that his final comp has significant amount of roti along with many different keys. Shots like this need every trick in the book and I can’t imagine getting an acceptable result with just one operation. I’d make several garbage mattes and then start with a few keys. Good luck!

Unfortunately, roto is probay going to be the answer here. If you can get a key to work, it will probably be a combination of every trick you have(luma, keylight, multiple garbage mattes, etc) If precision isn’t important, you should be ok but are still looking at many hours of work. If this has to be super tight, you may want to get a few guys to help out. Good luck !

Thanks for the reply. I’ll have to look into revealing masks along a path rather than fighting with write on or some other effect. Is there a good tutorial you’d recommend for this approach?

Is there geometry in the scene creating the main light? Maybe the camera is still seeing that?

It would look odd if the matte was hard edged, but maybe feather it a bit, maybe animate the feather? Ideally, yea, fire up Houdini and crank out a fluid sim, but in AE, not sure.
