Except for the line twitter issue, which only happens on certain (very few) shots, the downconverts look great here too. Certainly nothing “weak” or muddy.

Unless you explain what you weren’t happy with, suggesting settings is about as useful as giving someone color correction advice over the phone.

A while back people from Sony, including Juan Martinez, said this would happen but did not say when. Given that it seems Sandisk has been VERY SLOW in coming out with their cards which are about the same price as Sony’s and Sony seems to be partnering with them, I suspect THAT firmware update has been pushed back.

In other words I suspect Sony is going to give Sandisk some time to get return on investment before firmware update for the less expensive cards.

What you’re seeing is another variation on the Vignette issue that some cameras have. Search this forum using that key word and you’ll see simple test you can do to see if you’re camera has the issue (it apparently does). For many people, it only becomes obvious when Steady Shot is on.

If you call Sony support and explain the issue, they’ll tell you to send in the camera and they’ll realign the lens. Apparently it is/was most common with the first shipment of the cameras but a few are still reporting it.

What’s frustrating is that I’m keeping everything progressive and I’m seeing the twittering even on my Samsung 46″ 1080p set with DVD player set to Progressive out.

It’s as if one progressive scan line from SD source during zoom has issues “resolving” even on a progressive HDTV as it moves scan lines due to the zoom.

Alas, I wish there were a workflow that would result in no line twitter.

So I guess we can say that amongst us we’ve tried Compressor, Bit Vice, Episode all with approximately similar results. Line twitter remains.

At 24p a shutter of 1/48 and 180° is the same.

Shooting at faster shutter speeds can result in the “Saving Private Ryan” effect in which you get what some call a “stuttering” type motion. That’s due to decreased motion blur as there’s less motion in each frame.

You need to carefully control camera movement at 24p to not see the motion judder. There are guidelines to shooting 24p and getting good motion.

I followed up by trying with Episode Pro. Same results unfortunately so it’s not specific to Compressor.

Which means it was the same as Compressor?

Basically the twitter is at it’s worst when I do a slow zoom out on tree branches. So it’s a combination of horizontal lines and zoom that exacerbates the issue.

This question gets posted so often there should be an FAQ about it.

Right now there is only Sony and soon Sandisk SxS cards. Various sources do say that Sony will offer a firmware update to the camera which will allow the use of other cards. Such cards will still have to be certified by Sony. There is no date no certitude that this firmware update will happen but I did hear about it from reliable Sony reps. Keep in mind the data rate the card must handle is much higher than 35mbps especially in overcrank at 60fps.
