It’s quite possible that the “First” in the name not only refers to first time users but the first of major changes to the higher end versions of ProTools. Perhaps it’s their iMovie processor to their FCPX. Granted not so radical but it’s possible this how they’re looking at plugins and projects going into the future.

I can imagine though that some facilities would buy through the app store for licensing reasons though. If you have 5 seats of FCPX and needed the same plugins on all systems might be an advantage over buying from the developer’s site and only being able to install on one (or two) active systems.

I can see some of the smaller developers moving to the App Store.
I’m not sure about how some the business models of the bigger developers would fit.
FXFactory has their own management system.
RedGiant Universe is subscription although their “lifetime” membership could fit I suspect.
I’m not sure how Boris would have a motive to go the App Store route.I suspect on the professional end user side, it would make plugins more attractive since a facility with multiple FCPX seats can have the same plugins with each seat. No need to manage plugin serials or severe limits on number of supported seats.

It really seems that there’s a general trend for companies that develop post production software and hardware, that software is designed to sell hardware purchase.
Consider that Avid gets much bigger money selling Pro Tools hardware. Blackmagic also sells hardware, Edit Share (Lightworks) also hardware. Apple too.
Most have free versions with a paid version with a few more features.
It seems the companies move to cheap or free. While FCPX isn’t free, to date there’s never been paid follow up release.
While there’s still important uses for Avid MC outside of Unity/Isis system, there’s now a large number of quickly improving NLEs and sooner or later someone(s) are going to get close to Avid collaboration ability outside of their dedicated hardware.
Adobe is software only and they’re subscription, not purchase.

Clustering allows you to use the cores of multiple machines at the same time. They have to be connected by ethernet on the same subnet I believe.
