  • Please read the sticky at the top of the forum and include details.

Perhaps your lighting was high contrast and the encoder isn’t handling the edges but I can’t offer anything more than a wild guess without details. Perhaps the source files were a compressed codec that encoding is making more visible. Maybe too much sharpening on the source. Maybe an issue with keyed source. Perhaps you need to blur or soften edges on the source.

  • Sounds like you need to put in a proper key frame rate. Include both natural and forced key frames with forced being no more than 5 seconds apart (150 frames).

  • What’s not clear to the customer is what kind of support you’re getting with the price. I’m not sure if it would make a difference but, for a professional, knowing in advance that you’ll get good support may motivate one to pay for the higher priced app.

I few years ago I purchased Teleprompt+ from BombingBrains, an indie developer, for my iPad teleprompter.
At about $25 it’s priced a bit higher than the bottom feeder iOS prompters.
    https://www.bombingbrain.com/teleprompt.html
They even had a page on their site explaining that they were available for hire. Truly a mark of indie developers who knew their apps weren’t a sole source of income.

When I had questions/issues with setup and functions, they were quick to respond. Almost always within 24 hours and it was one of the developers, not a “support” person who responded. After a few bug fix updates things went silent for a long time. One day I searched to see what had happened and I discovered they had updated their app, which requires a new purchase.

I don’t have an issue with complete new purchases in that price range. There’s no upgrade pricing in the App Store and, given the value, the full price is really no more and probably far less then the upgrade price of a professional app.

What surprised me though is that I never received notice that a new version had been developed. Given past correspondence they certainly had email contact info for me. Had I not checked I’d have assumed (and actually had assumed) that they abandoned their apps. There’s also no notification in app that lets the user know a new paid version is available.

I do think if Apple allowed upgrade pricing they wouldn’t drive developers into bottom feed pricing structures. It doesn’t help that apparently there’s no in app notification of new versions.

Support absolutely costs money but, whether it’s the app store rules or the companies, if you can’t exploit your current customers whether it’s paid upgrades or even new paid versions, you’re being pushed into a model which doesn’t motivate support from the developer.

  • Perhaps whatever is happening at that point is bit starved. While the data rate is reasonably high, your peak isn’t much higher than your average making it very nearly a CBR encode. Try setting the peak at 4000kbps.

  • [Bill Davis] “a week after the event.”

So I’ll have to subject myself to all the post presentation buzz for a week. Sigh. It’s like being around the water cooler after missing last night’s episode.

  • They so better live stream this!

  • Both Litepanels kits are good but I think it’s best to mix and match to have more aesthetic control.
The Sola ENG for fresnel like controls. Great for hair light, back light, kicker. Although can certainly be key or fill ins some circumstances. Also has the ability to use with a cookie.
Panels are good for fill, key, possibly with added softbox with egg crate. Otherwise consider means to controlling spill when needed.

In short,I don’t think it’s an either/or but whatever can cover the widest variety of circumstances with the ability to control.

There’s a score of other considerations such as will you be fighting mix color temperatures in locations where you can’t turn off lights? Will there be windows? Are you trying to light the entire space rather than just the interviewees/performers? Do you want to have control over practicals?

[Tommy Dimmel] “It seems like YouTube’s compressor is getting totally bamboozled by this video. I’ve been working for months on this project, and I don’t know what the heck I’m going to do if this won’t upload right…ugh…. Any ideas?”

Alas they have pretty much a one size fits all (or limited encoder workflows based on sources). Others have run into this as well. That’s way some use higher end paid hosts over YouTube but obviously you don’t get the viral potential.

I believe some have uploaded ProRes or Uncompressed files with the belief that helps. I’m not sure that really works though.

I believe others have said uploading at 4K frame size and having YouTube downscale looks better than uploading 1080.

That video content would certainly challenge an encoder. It’s got just about everything encoder can struggle with.

Not sure if the greyed out defaults are what they portray in AME but try the following.
Set bitrate to 50,000kbps (50mbps) although it does look like you’re at 300mbps. Use High Profile. Entropy CABAC if that’s an option. Set KeyFrame rate to 1/2 the frame rate (this is extreme) which for 24fps would be a keyframe every 12 frames.
