Quicktime 10.4 probably doesn’t play H.264 video with MP3 audio.
This doesn’t have anything to do with your Mac as VLC is Mac compatible. It’s Apple’s choice of what their player can play. Quicktime 10 is far from a universal player. -
It’s likely there’s metadata needed in the structure to trick cameras into thinking the file was created by the camera. The workarounds depend on the camera and may not be possible with some cameras.
It seems to me it would be far easier to use one of the many inexpensive media players.

Compressor uses AAC instead of MP3 for audio when encoding to H.264 video.
You don’t mention how you are checking your encodes from Handbrake.
Perhaps you should check them in VLC. -
I’d like to help but you’ll have to provide some technical information.
Depending on the Sony camera there are a number of ways to handle proper mic, input, gain settings all dependent on the mic itself, which is why there’s user controllable settings. How it works on another camera may not be relevant. Different camera, different settings. -
Try hooking up to some other device to make sure the TV input isn’t at fault.

Are you doing a multipass encode? My hunch is it may be a cache issue.
You don’t mention the version but current version of Compressor is 4.2.1 and there’s been some major under the hood improvements from versions previous to 4.2BTW you should read the pinned post at the top of this forum. If you don’t provide enough information it’s possible people may not want to respond with lots of assumptions.

FCPX 10.2.2 natively supports XDCAM EX. ProApps Codec 2.0.3 should be installed as well. I have lots of footage from EX1 and the BPAV imports without issue. Installing Sony plugin might cause conflict. You may want to remove the plugins. Obviously the BPAV itself should be in a parent folder.
