Little things like using High Profile (some encoders default to Main) and CABAC entropy (some encoders default to CAVLC) can make a difference. Also Key Frame rate (GOP) being half the frame rate can also help improved quality.

Final Cut Pro X for Final Cut Pro 7 Editors most recent version dated Oct 2016 so this is recently revised. All White Papery err White PDFy. My guess is it may help those coming from other track based, tradition bin based NLEs as well.

For a good free intro I’d recommend Izzy Video It’s 2.5 hours so it’s not a Ripple Training or Larry Jordan replacement but it’s a quick free way for someone to get off the ground.

If you’re just using Favorites to help organize for Keywording, once you’re done assigning keywords you can then un-rate all the clips and start using Favorites as you normally would with their new intent.

Have you used Favorites yet?

You can Favorite all clips that don’t have keywords.
Make a Smart Collection of Favorited clips.
Keyword clips in the Favorite Smart Collection. As you are done with a selection, perhaps after some number of keywords. Un Favorite them, controlling their disappearance from that Smart Collection.

In some respects it’s a variation on Bob’s suggestion but instead of using a “meta” keyword, you’re using Favorite which has a very easy Un Favorite (un rate) option.
