[David Taylor] “I assume you can use Compressor as a stand alone program?”

Absolutely. You can export a ProRes file from FCP6 and move that file over to Compressor (on High Sierra).

[David Taylor] “How robust is the new closed caption feature?”
In Compressor? I haven’t tried it yet.

[David Taylor] “He just bought MacCaption to do that.”

Telestream has Flip but that’s a monthly service. If you can buy it just for one month that might be a solution and it should work with Mac Caption generated captions.

Do you know anyone with High Sierra or might you be willing to partition a drive?
The current version of Apple Compressor and encode to ProRes MXF, AVC Intra MXF, XDCAM HD MXF.
Compressor is $50 and the OS is free of course.

[Bouke Vahl] “I don’t know why but people dive head first in shallow water and then complain it hurts.”

In the “good old days” we would always test a production workflow before committing to is.
Otherwise, cost and/or quality may suffer.

  • I do think it’s interesting that they offer 6 core i7 and i9 though. Wonder how it all compares to a top BTO iMac.
Given the reliable rumors of a MacMini update this fall, things certainly look interesting. I’m going to guess new Quad i7 returns to the Mini.
Of course one can expect a nice CPU bump when the iMacs are updating later on.
It might be an interesting year for Mac computers this year even if it feels like a bit of catchup.

  • Blackmagic eGPU Thought this might be of interest relative to the new MBP

Doesn’t seem to be any firmware update for that lens at the moment. I believe they do issue firmware updates though.

You may want to contact Sony and see if this is a known issue with a firmware fix in the works.

Hmm, might there be an issue with the electrical contacts?
Do you have another Sony lens you can test with?
Otherwise does the lens have firmware update options?

June 21, 2018 at 3:33 pm in reply to: High Sierra not able to preview EX1r cam files

QuickLook isn’t what it used to be and I suspect it’s development in AVFoundation / Core Media.
Otherwise there are plenty of apps that should work.
I used to own an EX1 so I may have to occasionally use those files but I just import into FCPX.

Why do you need the OS to read them?
Could be changes in the OS if you’re referring to QuickLook
VLC is it’s own thing. Make sure it’s current. If it is and you can’t read it, report it to them.
If you’re editing in Resolve 15 and they’re working without issue you should be good to go.

    [Nate Winspear] “Sony’s Content Browser”

Try Catalyst Browser, Content Browser is dead.
    https://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/catalystbrowse
    Catalyst Browse system requirements
A 64-bit operating system: Microsoft® Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10 or macOS 10.11 (El Capitan), 10.12 (Sierra), or 10.13 (High Sierra)
2 GHz processor (multicore or multiprocessor CPU recommended for HD; 8 cores recommended for 4K)
500 MB hard-disk space for program installation
Solid-state disk (SSD) or high-speed RAID for 4K media
4 GB RAM (8 GB recommended; 16 GB recommended for 4K)
NVIDIA, AMD/ATI, or Intel GPU with support for OpenCL 1.1 or later with at least 512 MB of memory (2 GB recommended for 4K) or a CPU with SSE 4.2 or higher. OpenGL 2.1 is recommended for optimum performance.

And if you’re on OS 10.12.6 you probably don’t have the current version of FCPX either. as it requires 10.13.2 and later.

Using software that predates Sony’s update means that the older programs you have may not have been updated to handle the codec.
