I’m not sure I understand your thinking on this. It seems to be lower priced than the higher end RED, Arri and Sony cameras used in features. I would think it’s much more of a mid priced camera. Granted it needs some pricy add ons (doesn’t come with view finder for example) but it doesn’t seem that it would cost anywhere near “uppermost tier.”

Maybe so but it felt very comfortable on my shoulder. I could see it being used in Docs and Reality TV.

While it comes with PL Mount, I understand that’s removable to allow for third party lens mounts for other lens types so one wouldn’t be limited to PL glass.

If it’s just single camera charge that as you would a single camera shoot.

You’d have to mark up and charge CDN cost (Ustream paid account cost) if that’s what you’re using.

I assume your client is providing reliable (tested) internet access. Never assume the client knows what you need so you should test or have someone knowledgeable test. There’s nothing like finding out a hundred other people are using the same connection at the same time, killing your bandwidth.

If you want to skip the computer that might work once you’ve set up the Monarch.
The computer gives you some additional features which you may or may not need.

I use both Matrox and Blackmagic. I just did a two camera using 15″ MBPr. One camera into Mini Recorder, the other into the MXO2. Each using Thunderbolt ports. I did my switching and encoding in the computer with Wirecast but I could send that to Monarch to avoid stressing the laptop CPU.

Does it have an Express Port?
You’d need a Matrox MXO2 with Express port adaptor to bring in the EX1.
Otherwise you’d have do use the camera in HDV mode over Firewire which is something I would not recommend.

Getting the video and audio out to the Matox Monarch will also have issues. You’d need to go from DVI to HDMI and then patch the audio separately.

You would be much better off with a new 15″ MBP Retina.

You’d go Camera SDI to Blackmagic Ultrastudio Mini Recorder to Thunderbolt. There are other Blackmagic devices or MXO2 with Thunderbolt adapter which would also work. You could encode with the free Ustream Producer or take the MBPr HDMI out to the Monarch HD for streaming and recording.

Your encoder settings are pretty good. I could make minor suggestions for improvement but ultimately you’re seeing limits on YouTube’s side.

My suggestions would be up the data rate to 50Mbps. Use High Profile CABAC. Doing this will only help very little though.

Also, as per your comparison, you may want to use processing filters to compensate for the changes YouTube’s encoder is making in your black and gamma.

Some things such as “water motion,” clouds, camera movement, transition are very big challenges for encoders since pixels are changing every frame and codecs use that to decide what information gets thrown out.

You might want to consider having a look a Vimeo Plus. Must be Plus for 1080 and better encoding on their end.

In order to encode H.264 .mp4 you’d need Compressor 4.
Compressor 3 only does H.264 .mov (or m4v for iOS devices).

It doesn’t make sense. You MUST end up with MPEG2 encode for DVD. Encoding something twice always results in lower quality. Alway start with high quality such as Apple ProRes and encode that to MPEG2 for DVD.

If you’re trying to make a DVD Video Disc you have to compress to DVD which requires a separate video and audio file for authoring. Compressor, depending on the version I believe, can burn a simple “screener” DVD and has an automated workflow for that.

If you just want to burn a file onto a disc the customer can play on a computer usually an H.264 .mp4 can work which is easy to do in Compressor 4.1.1 but not in Compressor 3.5.3 which can only do H.264 .mov. That can work as well but there are some variables depending on the age and operating system of the computer.

H.264 is leagues ahead of the MPEG2 encoding used for standard def DVD, quality and can be HiDef frame sizes..

File size is always a function of data rate and duration of the source.

DVD preset is to create files used to author a DVD Video Disc.
YouTube preset which is H.264 .mov will be much better quality but it has nothing to do with DVD authoring.

It depends what you want the DVD to be used for. DVD Video needs to be authored. DVD to store a file to be copied to a computer could be any file you want that the customer might be able to play on their computer.
