Got the exact same message with AVI file. A fellow editor gave me files on disc edited on Pinnacle Studio. They were DV/DVCPro wrapped in AVI (as opposed to MOV). Despite the warning the files worked fine.

Hi David,
Post your complete work flow if you can. I’ve used Flip4Mac with DVCProHD and I know others who’ve used HDCAM source to produce 720p WMVHD files without issue. A few have reported blockiness on dissolves with HDV source. I can’t help but think it’s how WMV export handles heavily compressed HDV.
Charles have you tested Flip4Mac with HDV source?
My own recommendation would be to get out of HDV on import/capture. Upconvert to DVCProHD on import to get away from the heavily compressed HDV GOP structure. I suspect dissolves (as well as keys) will survive much better.
David, I’d like to see an HDV clip wrapped in mov (export from FCP as Quicktime Movie Self contained). If you email me I’ll give you FTP info. Streamclip (I use it also) may get you through this deadline but I’d like to examine the HDV issue closely.

You really should get a Monitor with a “blue check” to set to color bars. You might be able to do it with the proper Rosco or Wratten Blue filter although I don’t know the exact filter number off hand.
Even if you’re only doing corporate video the Exec might not be too pleased when his corporate logo isn’t the right color on the $5000 HDTV in the conference room.
This MIGHT work. It’s only 10″ but it includes blue gun.

If you’re using Compressor 2, don’t use any of the Compressor 1 presets found in “Custom.”
How are you checking playback (what device)?Try dropping the Max bit rate to 7 or even 6.5.
Since it’s so short, try doing a CBR encode at around 6.

Works in Cleaner 6, 6.5, Compressor 2, Apple apps such as QTPro,FCP,iMovie. Flip4Mac 1.0.6 works in Squeeze while they work on 2.0.x compatibility. -
Flip4Mac allows you to play WMV in Quicktime with all the neat things one likes about Quicktime such as frame by frame jog. Flip4Mac also has an exporter in which you can make WMV. Of course we’d prefer H.264 but in a world where our clients most likely have WMP, it’s doesn’t always make sense to encode to a format that only QT7 can play.

Many of the sites also have DVCProHD in MOV format. Those should work.
Flip4Mac has an MXF importer for XDCAM to Final Cut Pro. I’d think it would be good if they were to support it for P2 also. Sony and Panasonic are using MXF in slightly different formats. Maybe Jan can go into detail.

Advanced was supposed to be suppored in this release. I noted that it’s not working too (just tried it) and I’ll let the Flip4Mac folks know.

And one has to wonder why the moved away from Apple’s variant of H.264 which I believe as available but “not well implemented” in Squeeze 4.1

VC1 is not officially supported but I have a hardware encoded VC1 file (don’t remember the encoder device at the moment) that does play. It’s a 62MB file about 1:20, 1920×1080. WMP9 Mac reports the data rate at about 17Mbps. Flip4Mac 2 plays it full screen on my 23″ Cinema display without a hitch. Wonder if it’s “non standard” in any way or maybe something to do with the specific hardware encoder.
