Just for a second opinion, there is really no issue using DV tapes in a HDV camera. One thing to consider is they don’t hold up when re-used.

For a small investment could you not use a CF card reader? It would transfer your footage much faster than the USB out of the camera.

One big thing you left out was budget. The HV30 is a good camera for students but if you are going to be spending the money on a 35mm lens adapter and presumably 35mm lenses why not consider the Canon 7D? It’s not perfect, but I think it would be a great solution for film students. When you are not shooting video with it, shoot stills. I’m always trying to encourage my shooters to pick up a DSLR and shoot more stills. It will make you much more aware of light and composition.

Hey Dave, I’m not sure how much helicopter shooting you’ve done but I’ve posted some helpful hints from my heli-shoot experiences on https://www.digijunkie.com I’ve mostly shot 1080i (XDCAM) on a F330. Do you intend to over-crank for smoother playback? Good idea.
