Exactly. People being educated on a consumer level is a good thing. People make a living as writers too. But most folk can write and with computers they are as good as the touch typists of old and spell check takes care of most of the misspellings.

Just the same, there is more professional productions then ever before. In the old days, there was no easy way to learn production unless you had connections, anyone who knew how to do it and had access to the equipment could get gigs even if they didn’t have an artistic bone in their head and were rude besides. Most families owned a decent still camera. Being able to edit the stills easily has been around now for a while. Just the same, people make a living as photographers.

I’ve had any number of plumbers rip me off. Cause its not something I feel comfortable with and I need to trust them. Is that a good thing?

Bottom line, it’s the content that matters because pretty decent quality is much more accessible. However, I wonder if that kid’s video had usable audio. One man bands don’t usually fly too high and once you need a crew than the for free status of the non pros starts to fall apart as soon as you need to make a living at something. Good production is just too time consuming. If that Kid made a decent feature length movie that his peers are willing to pay for then good for him. If its for free then sooner or later when they are adults they’ll have to make a living and most likely will want to watch movies shot by pros.

I don’t think any one here lost a gig cause that kid shot it himself.

“Library” in FCP X began as one master collection of all the projects (And I don’t mean timelines) on the root level of a drive. Since this was an impractical decision from day 1, a work-around was a virtual drive in the form of sparse bundles. But at least Library was what it sounded like.

So it was originally a library of all your projects and media — just like your mail is in a library.

Find and Open the Folder Where OS X Mail Stores Mail

To go to the folder that holds your OS X Mail messages:

Open a new window in OS X Finder.
Select Go | Go to Folder… from the menu.
​You can also press Command-Shift-G.
Type “~/Library/Mail/V3”.

The only 1.5 names I like in FCP X’s “Libraries” window (ok you can still open all your libraries in the libraries window.)

are folders and the new (Smart) Collection. I think smart is stupid, but ‘collection’ is a very easily understood name for a folder. It’s the only name I know for folder that does not reference a container that has a certain form in the physical world. That said, BIN has a charm to it, referencing the history of motion pictures-a container that held film. And container would work in the same generic sense. Bundle might work.

By default an EVENT will be named with the date you are creating it. Of course events take place on a certain date. But it’s very strange to create a new event in the NLE. It’s even stranger to create a new “project” when really it’s a timeline being used for the same project. Sure you get used to it because our mind can call anything anything but that does not mean it’s a good choice.

Way before FCP X, Aperture used ‘Libraries’ both in the app and on the finder level and ‘projects’ which were folders that you could import new photos into under the same library umbrella. It made more sense than in FC but was still dicey and made it harder, not easier, for end users to control their media.

Then I thought it would be less graphically cluttered like the use or X itself.

And I really doubt they’ll be a FCP XI. too graphically cluttered

On the other hand it all began with:

FCP X (the brand) started with version 10.

Apple heads will say it was derived from OS X, but there was an OS 9.

OS 10 lacked graphical symmetry thus OS X.

The shame of it was that FCP 8 would also have had perfect symmetry.

Hey Bret, great idea. Once you connect edit the solid what do you use to fade it in and out? A dissolve or the video animator? Didn’t X used to have a handle built into the video portion just like the handle on the audio?

Hi Bret,

Got the video animation opacity working but was curious about your suggestion so played with it. I get it and it works. Is there any danger using this technique in terms of having future video/audio sync? can you fill the frame you trimmed with a gap clip?

Thank you John, that was exactly what I tried to do before posting. Don’t know why, but before I could not drag the downstream keyframe to the base of opacity. I kept getting a straight line down to the out point But starting clean it worked as I had expected and you suggested.

Sometimes I need to quit and reopen FC to get some weird behavior back on track. Regardless, knowing that a certain behavior is expected is way easier than if you are on unsure ground.

They are not enterprise class but they are desk stars which are pretty well reviewed and 7200rpm. What I was really asking about was whether these enclosures can handle 6TB drives.

I have considered this a strong suit in FCP X. I set the first keyframe and then As I transform as I move through the clip the keyframes are set automatically. But I haven’t used more advanced motion tools like after effects or motion so maybe at a high level it more problematic.

[John Davidson] “setting an in/out in the browser, hitting q, and either the in/out ranged clip goes into the timeline where I didn’t want it, only 2 frames goes into the clip where I did want it, or the ENTIRE clip forgets my in/out and goes into the timeline. can’t imagine what key that would be for those behaviors. Sounds like a bug. Q always works for me. Are you perhaps setting a target somehow in the timeline that is limiting what part of the range you set in the browser is actually edited to the timeline? Like a three point edit?

But one gotcha I run into all the time and it may somehow account for this miscue (pun intended) is My not being active in the window of X I think I’m active in. command 1 and 2. For example Q W or E a clip, I assume I am now in the timeline. But I’m not. So if i hit space to play, the wrong playhead is now moving. Another annoyance for me is if I have already set a range in the browser I can’t then mouse click drag a new range within the range I had already set. I have to drag AND use I and O to set a new range.
