If the firewire drive has a clone of the system you want to now copy to a new drive, then the firewire drive should have CCC on it and you boot and run ccc from the firewire drive and chose the drive you want to clone it to. Psync is for incremental backups so you won’t need that for a complete restore. Boot using the firewire drive launch CCC and you’ll see all the options. I would reformat the corrupted drive first using apple’s disc utility. I did all this once and the only program I had trouble with was FCP, which wanted me to reinsert the original disc, and I had to reregister. Repair permissions on the firewire drive before cloning. CCC gives you this option before it clones so just click yes.

then read page 99-100. It explains it.

Removed the fcp system id number from the root library, reinstalled and good to go.

could be a bad wire or connection. if you are using cat 5 wires sometimes the little colored wires inside the plugs come loose.

    Thanks Matte:

Granted, I”m asking for a good option at lower price points. Decent quality in something rugged enough to withstand the abuse of careless students.

That’s appealing because the mic can then do double duty to record in the field and be used for editing. However. There are limited number of firewire ports on the Emac/Imac. I don’t see room on these computers to add a firewire card. But perhaps there is a work flow that will address this limitation.

That’s a possibility. In fact we will be using a number of consumer cams that only have mini-jack inputs. Is there a decent mic that uses this type of plug? I know we will be limited by the length of the wire but for voiceovers and many shoots that should not be a problem. It’s not like these cams have powerful zoom lenses. Granted depth of field will be a problem. Students will need to be their own art directors/floor managers.

What do you think of this:

Again, any suggestions on the low end but decent and rugged? In other words at what price point does the debate really begin?

    Thanks.

  • Thansk Don. This is what concerned me. But like i asked Jeff above, how to i choose where Imovie will save captured footage? Craig

  • THANKS JEFF, Most of my experience has been with FCP. When I try to capture footage using Imovie, I don’t see the option to save where i want (such as a connected firewire drive). How is this done using Imovie. My plan would be to buy a few external firewire drives to capture to and simply connect them to the best of the Emacs we have when we are ready for editing. Even with short form films you can end up with a lot recorded and i have six classes each with 5-6 “production teams.” I can see the hard drives getting very full very fast. Thanks.
