I’ll get you that screenshot when I’m able.
I’ve tried them in the same group, I’ve tried them in different groups. I’ve tried re-ordering the groups. I’ve tried re-ordering the objects within one group.
I’ve tried stock emitters such as “data flow” and others. It doesn’t matter, behavior is the same.
I’m sorry to be harsh, but I simply don’t believe you when you say you don’t encounter this problem. I would be ecstatically happy to be proven wrong.
The bug is as follows:
2D particle emitters behave correctly in the 3D environment. That is, when they are behind an object, they disappear, when they are in front of an object, they show.
3D particle emitters behave incorrectly in the 3D environment. Whether or not they show/disappear with other objects is dependent on layer order, and has nothing to do with position in 3D space.
It does not matter if 3D render is set to “local” or “global”. Bug is the same.
With paint, the problem is similar. Certain brush types behave correctly, other brush types always follow layer order.
It seems Motion is in a transition phase toward becoming a true 3D environment.

No alpha channel. It’s a bug in the software I fear. Here are two examples, the only difference being layer order.

Here are examples using a blob of paint. The emitter has the same behavior. If the emitter is 2D, it will behave correctly in the 3D environment. If the emitter is 3D, it will show/disappear according to layer order.
Here are two examples, the only difference is the layer order. One has the paint blob above the video, the other has the paint blob below the video, and neither one of them behave correctly.
Blend modes are all normal.

Nope, didn’t work. I switched from “local 3D” to “global 3D” and the particle emitter is still visible through the video in front of it.
It’s a bug.

Yes, Gary, I had already been doing the things you suggested.
As it turns out, (in my opinion) the bug in Motion is as follows:
Particle emitters will behave correctly in the 3D environment, so long as the emitter itself is only 2D. 3D emitters behave incorrectly. 3D emitters show/disappear according to layer order, not according to position in 3D space.
Paint behaves as follows:
If “fill” is checked, paint behaves correctly in 3D, but is itself only a 2D object.
Checking “outline” automatically unchecks “fill”. Brush types “image” and “airbrush” behave incorrectly, just as do 3D emitters. Brush type “solid” behaves correctly.
I would be happy, even ecstatic to be proven wrong, and to find the “magic checkbox”.
Gary, I’d be happy to pay your usual outrageous fee. Let me know what it is. You in LA by chance?
Perhaps you can create a quick demo of a 3D particle emitter behaving correctly in 3D. Cuz, I’m skeptical. I don’t believe it.

Yes, the particle emitter was 3D. I don’t find a check box to make paint 3D. It appears that paint styles are just 2D or 3D and that’s how they are. Maybe I missed it.
Pay is negotiable. It’s a 22 minute sequence. I can do all the keyframing, I would just need it rendered correctly.
First I’d want some evidence it works. I’m skeptical at this point. Can you please post a simple example like the one I did?

The layer order doesn’t fix it, I’ve tried dragging the paint layer either above or below the video, it doesn’t matter.
Yes, the paint is 3D. I have the same problem with a 3D particle emitter.

Thanks for doing it. This is making me completely crazy.
My opacity is set to 100%. Blend modes are normal.
If anyone has any idea why I see paint and particle emitters through a video, please let me know.
