It’s great for MBP’s. An ENG sports shooter here has developed a great system for shooting hilites of live sporting events and uses the Turbo to encode clips to send back to the station for broadcast. He shoots the game with a camera that has a buffer. Sets the buffer to 20-30 seconds and just follows the game without recording. When a play, goal, hit, TD… happens he taps the record button and gets all the build up and rolls on the celebration. Then between periods/halfs/quarters… uses a MBP with the Turbo to encode the good plays and uploads them to the station’s FTP for broadcast.

This product can do wonders if you are limited by processing speed on a MacBook Pro.

Not sure how it stacks up against brand new top end quad core MBP’s, but on dual-core ’09 and earlier MBP’s it speeds up the h.264 encoding big time.

On your crop sensor camera the 50mm 1.4 lens is great for interviews and very affordable. Couple this with the mid-range 35mm and 85mm ( and maybe something near the 14-20mm range for the bigger wide shots) and you are set for most situations. If you find you need something longer look to add down the road a 70-200 f4L non-IS (non IS to save a bunch of bucks, as you will always be shooting on sticks or some kind of stabilizer right?! 😉
If I was looking for a single lens to rule them all, the best of the bunch is the Canon 24-70mm 2.8L.Take a solid look at the Sigma version of this lens as well and save a few hundred! Some say it is optically every bit as good as the Canon and I’ve read a test or two that put it above, though the build quality is not as robust in regards to weather proofing and materials used.

The Cinema Tools method will look the best, but as Alan mentioned it is simply changing the metadata so that the clip plays 29.97 fames per second instead of 24 – thus shortening the clip and speeding up motion within the shot.
Using Compressor to create new frames will yield the same duration, but in my opinion wont look as clean. Even on best I often get misinterpreted motion and other uglies in the results.
The method you go with really depends on what the subject matter is. Experiment with a clip or three and go with whatever works best for the material/subject matter.

If the footage is broll and you need the movement smooth I would convert the footage to an I-frame codec and batch conform it in Cinema Tools to 29.97.

What format is the footage, and where do you have it stored?
If you primarily work with HD footage on a macbook pro I would recommend to work in ProRes 422, get an express34 e-Sata card and a fast drive like the G-RAID (as long as you have a MBP with the express slot, if not then go with FW800 drives – the G-RAID has this connection as well)

Depends on where you have the footage stored and the format of your HD Footage.
If you have the footage on the internal drive of your laptop.. then you’re gonna have trouble.
If your footage is on a FW400 or USB drive, you’re gonna have trouble.
If you footage is uncompressed you’re gonna have trouble.
If you have your footage on a FW800 drive, but the drive is almost full, you’re gonna have trouble.Colin McQuillan

Preview as in your external monitor?
Final Cut Pro drop down menu –> System Settings –> Change frame offset value to ‘0’ (default is 4)Also, If you are playing through un-rendered elements on a timeline this can also cause the external monitor’s picture to lag behind what is playing in the canvas.
