Post a still image on an imagehost and I think people will be able to give you more help. Are you using a Camera to pan around these 3d layers? If you are, maybe the virtual cam is using a very wide angle lens and distorting how the layers appear on the screen. And if you are viewing them without a camera in the precomp, this is why they appear different in the main comp.

You might want to try a particle system to create the steam in AE like Trapcode Particular.

on how to import Maya data. However you said you want to “import your 3d Maya Files into AE for 3d motion tracking.” Keep in mind that AE does not have a 3d motion tracker, it only has a 2d motion tracker. Also, when you said you want to import your 3d models, this can’t be done without something like invigorator, and with Zaxwerks Invigorator all you can do is bring in a .obj file (so no maya textures). All you can do is bring Maya camera data and the positions of nulls (I think Maya calls them locators) into After Effects.

I would suggest going here https://toolfarm.com/pluginfinder/index.php?Knoll%20Unmult and downloading Knoll Unmult again and replacing the one you have now…its a nice plug in and its free.

Personally, I don’t know why you would want to use Vista. Sure it may have cool transparent windows and neat effects when you minimize windows, but AE and your other production studio apps will probably perform a fair amount slower than on Windows XP, due to all the RAM Vista will eat up. If I was buying a Windows machine primarily to use Production Stuido, I wouldn’t get Vista. However, if the computer will be used primarily for non video related stuff, maybe Vista would be alright. Just my .02 however, and I’m no Windows Vista expert.

What is the exact expression you are using and what is the error message you are getting?

I have an After Effects tee-shirt I got from a previous employer so at least we know they do exist…however I think he said he got it at some kind of trade show so I don’t know an easy way to get your hands on one.

For real 3D warping your going to need a plug in called “Forge Freeform.” If you want to import some basic objects from Maya (without their textures) check out a plug in called “Zaxwerks Invigorator.” Also, this is the After Effect’s expressions form, for general questions like this you might want to post them on the general After Effects forum.
