I just want the dialogue to sound natural, as if the voice is coming from a real person just next to you. “Narrow frequencies” make voice sound like it’s coming out from a telephone (I’m exaggerating but it’s the closest that I can think of). But you are right, the narrow frequency is a blessing because it rejects unwanted sounds.

My next question is this: if I stick with the narrow frequency microphone, what should I do in post-production to make it sound like a wide frequency mic. Just the feel; I’m not intending to bring back the rejected sounds.

I think I’m referring to dynamic range, where the sound is richer. On some cheaper mics, the sound seem to lack low and high frequencies. I can only hear the “middle”. Sorry, I’m not sure if my terms are correct but that’s the best that I can describe it.

I noticed that using the H6’s phantom creates less noise. Yesterday I checked out the specs and it says impedance is 200 ohms for battery and 300ohms for phantom (if i remember the numbers correctly).

I went to a rental shop yesterday to borrow a decent shock mount. But while I’m there, i tried to isolate each part of my mic set by trying out their blimp, pole, audio technica microphone, cable, etc. I found out that it was the mic that’s causing the noise. So I went back to the store and replaced my mic with a Rode (the only branded mic they sell). The Rode NTG2 also didn’t exhibit handling noise.

Now my next question is this: can I put a battery inside the NTG2 and turn on my H6’s phantom power so i can even lower the recorder’s volume? Will this damage the mic or the H6?

It was a great option as far as budget was concerned. I also found a test video on the web and sound was good enough. Although i didn’t see it mounted on a boom. You’re right. It might not be perfect after all.

From where i live, there are only two options to get a shock mount: buy this Boya shotgun (because it’s the only one with an included shock mount) or buy the Rode blimp. I chose the first option because it fits my budget. Do you have experience with the Rode blimp (with shock mount)? Is it good at eliminating handling noise. Again, thank you and God bless!

I’ve used ME66/K6 on the H4n. Power was on in the ME66 and the +48 volt was also on in the H4n. Richard said it may behave badly. Will that damage the shotgun mic and/or the zoom h4n?

Hi David. Thanks for sharing. The MKH416 have so many good reviews that it actually became my dream to have one. Sad that I can’t afford it right now.

About the 416 and 60, can they double as an indoor microphone. I was told that there are reflections with most shotgun mics. How do they compare with the ME-66 in terms of reflection? Yes, i know that there’s no one mic for all situations. However, since I have very limited budget right now, I would like something that would be somehow multipurpose.

Finally, can the H4n power these microphones with good levels? It’s what we have right now.

The sample from the previous show had no microphone in the shot so I presumed they were using a shotgun mic from a boom. The organizers want it this way so that there’s nothing blocking the decorations on the officers’ uniforms. But I also agree with you that simply using a handheld mic will solve many problems.

I had someone holding the boom for me as I stood just beside the camera so that the interviewee is looking at me, not directly to the camera.
