If the Panasonic uses a small part of the sensor, and the Canon uses the whole sensor but dumps data, does that mean the Canon will exhibit more moire, artifacts, and stairstepping? When you said “dumps data” does that mean dumping every other horizontal lines?

Now, I’m having 2nd thoughts of buying Canon 60D. I think the GH2 is better. The only problem is the GH2 is not available here in Panasonic Philippines.

Can the GH2 inexpensively make a similar bokeh to a Canon 60D with 50mm 1.4 lens (regular 1:1 lens)? The 60D has bigger sensor so I’m thinking it would blur my backgrounds better.

Is there a focus assist on the articulating LCD where you can enlarge the image to get critical focus? We’re using that feature on our Sony FX1000 and never bothered to buy a high definition monitor because the built in LCD is already working for us.

I don’t have any of these video DSLRs so I’m just wondering if this is possible.

Looking through the camera’s viewfinder, is it possible to press the shutter-release button halfway in still mode just to focus the camera, then shift to video mode to shoot video using that focus setting? Of course, this is only for subjects that will have a fixed distance from the camera.

Sorry John. This is what I meant by “utilized”…

The 5D has a full frame sensor but only a portion of it, which is 1920×1080, is being used for the video image. Now my question is, depending on the actual size of each pixel in 5D and 7D, is the 1920×1080 pixels in 5D bigger than the 1920×1080 pixels of the 7D? If this is the case, then the 5D will have shallower depth of field using the same lens.

Thomas, do I get this correctly? If both 7d and 5d use 1920×1080 pixels in their sensors for video, then a larger surface area on the sensor will be used in the 5D, which means that even if both cameras don’t utilize the whole sensor, the 5D utilizes a bigger surface area than the 7D. This is true if both have the same size of pixels. Wait, do they have the same size of pixels?

Same with Thomas, I would also like to confirm if the video clips recorded in the SD/CF cards from the Canon cameras (the 5D, 7D, 60D, 550D) are recorded with 4:2:2 color space.

And since I’m working in AE on a PC, there’s no reason to convert from h.264 to ProRes 422. Do I understand you guys correctly?
