Is there a bulletin on this? I’m not sure if ours is new enough or not. I hadn’t noticed any problems with the mounting. Is it tapered on the front of the camera?

Yes. I emailed a fella I’d talked to at Sony previously about the U1. Here’s the text of his reply:
Hi Clint,
The expanded generic storage capability is not available on the U-1 yet.
It’s currently being piloted on the PDW-HD1500 and the PDW700 and will soon be added to the U-1.-Ian
I’m pretty anxious for this development too. The latest drivers got my U1 working with my Mac, I just can’t park data on it (in excess of 500mb). The update we’re waiting for is for them to unlock the size of the General folder so we can store vast amounts of BPAV’s in it. 🙂

Hard for Sony to do anything at this point other than to release a PCI-Express based card adapter. The camera’s firmware could be updated for compatibility, and with a fast enough bus speed (the apparent bottleneck in using SD cards in EX cameras now) it could probably overcrank comparably.
If the JVC is accomplishing the 2x overcrank by means of a buffer internal to the camera, that’s also something Sony could engineer into their SD adapter. It would be worth some serious bucks to many EX owners, too.
Sony’s going to have to do some soul searching (for lack of a better term) to determine whether the $800 cards are going to push people elsewhere, or whether they want to get on board the SD ship before it’s sailed beyond their reach. They could charge for the high-speed adapters to current customers (including screwing us for a firmware upgrade we’d rather do ourselves, if required) and offer them with rebate to new camera customers.
That’s always the danger with proprietary formats. The stubborn stick to their guns and go the way of the dinosaur. Hopefully Sony will open up the EX line a little more rather than doing something foolish. If they win, we win.

Panasonic wasn’t hiding that information. When they first came around pitching P2, they showed that it was (at that time) four high speed (at that time) SD cards bridged by their proprietary architecture to achieve the transfer rates required by their hardware and codec. In fact, some of their product literature at the time had cutaway photos of the cards. If they were bragging on anything, it was that their card’s internal design made SD cards fast enough to do what they required for tapeless HD.
That’s the other key to the SxS being faster than the USB-based SD adapters for the Sony EX cameras, from my understanding. Sony’s cards have PCI Express-based internals, where the MxR or MxM have USB-based guts.

Sorry, I was out of town from 4am to 5pm yesterday on a grueling shoot, I didn’t get a chance to check the forums.
Instead of using a timecode reader or TC burn on the timeline, I drag the “Timecode Reader” effect from the Effects pallete (under Video Filters>Video” to the first clip. Right click on the clip, select Copy. Highlight all your other clips, right-click on one of ’em, select “Paste Attributes,” and select “Filters.” I think you also need to make sure that “Scale Attribute Times” is checked, but I’m not sure. That may only need to be done for keyframed effects, but I left it checked anyway.

How are you applying the Timecode Reader effect to your footage? It needs to be applied to each clip individually in order to display the clip’s time code. I just did it in FCP and it worked perfectly.

Neat little box, but I’d rather trust a laptop running Clip Browser doing a CRC check with my footage. Fewer cords to jury-rig, too 🙂

We keep an online archive RAID attached to an iMac, which is also used for project managers to go and browse footage. Archives right now are done to DVD, which are in our gigantic fire safe. I have a PDW-U1 waiting for the firmware to turn it into a high capacity data drive. I know there was some software out in the UK or something, but I don’t feel like a guinea pig right now.

I don’t know if it’s necessary to remove this as well, but I did find a file “com.sony.bprl.xdcamexporter.plist” file in my user preferences folder. I remember somebody mention a database incompatibility between versions of one of the Sony apps, but I don’t remember if that was Clip Browser or XDCAM Transfer.

Sandisk CF cards come with a file recovery utility on a 3″ CD-ROM. I’ve used them on other sorts of cards and I’m sure they’ll work on any card or drive. See if you’ve got such a utility laying around (or go buy a cheap card and get the CD with it).
