Ditto! Thank you Boris & M100. Like many, I went over to Final Cut a year or so ago, didn’t like it, and switched back to good ol’ Media 100i 8.2.3a. I’ve used M100 since 1997. It is rock solid and has always put out such clean video. Also, much thanks to Floh for being there for all of us with questions and problems.
We are waiting to purchase 3 HDCAM EX cameras when they come out, and will upgrade to Media100 HD soon after that. One of our editors is using Avid Express Pro for HD for now, and all SD is still on M100i. Picture in picture is what we use a lot of in Avid and would like it to be as easy to use in M100 as we do not use After Effects. The biggest request would be color correction like in Final Cut. But, please….don’t change the user interface and ease of use as this is what we all have grown to love and appreciate! -
Great little product that I’ve used for years to digitize VHS into M100 is Elite Video’s BVP4-Plus (broadcast video processor). If you find yourself still doing VHS from time to time, consider getting one from Ebay or whereever. There was one posted on Ebay with full description of what it can do. Eilite Video no longer sells them. I still have mine, although I haven’t had to use it for more than a year now, I am willing to give it up.

I had to do an Archive & Install on a G5 a few days ago with the help of Apple Care. I went from 10.3.9 to 10.4. I have the 10.4 install disc for Tiger, which is what I used. THAT’s where the problem is – it doesn’t like 10.4. I couldn’t even get online as it wouldn’t recognize my router. I have more than one Mac, luckily, and downloaded 10.4.6 (do NOT go higher), which I then installed on the G5 that I was updating (the one with M100). Everything was fine. What a huge relief….all it was, was the 10.4 version.

Thank you Floh! So good, I can now purchase Producer and work with that for now on some projects. Purchasing a new computer for HDe is a dilema, as the card is not compatible with the MacPro, so I am waiting to see if Media 100/Boris will work on it in the coming months. One more question on Producer….will it work on a 17″ PowerBook 1.33 Gig, or is it for G5’s only? Thank you!

(Floh) Apple changed their hardware design from PCI-X to PCIe (PCI Express), which requires new boards.
Does that mean those of us who have a G5 with PCI-X (and expansion chassis) will not be able to use the any of the new HD systems without buying a NEW G5?

I have a G5 with the expansion chassis and I digitize at 300kb. I tried Tiger a few months back and it did not work and had to go back to 10.3.9.
I’m am looking forward to finally upgrading to Tiger (the latest version of Tiger works?) and begin working with SW.
Thank you M100/Boris! Not all of us can afford the upgrade to the HD system, but want to remain with M100. -
When we were digitizing VHS tapes, we would simply go through a switcher. This elimiated the crashing.
Back in 2000 when we were digitizing a lot from VHS, we purchased a BVP-4 processor (no longer sold from Elite Video). This would clean up the footage while being digitized and at times was quite an improvement. If you still do a lot with VHS, you may want to look into one. We connected this directly to the BOB and it worked fine. They are available on Ebay. B&H has used for $399 (rather expensive). We have ours collecting dust in a closet as we haven’t touched VHS in 3 years. -
As Floh said, it has only been tested with the G5 PCI-X. We switched to the G5 and 8.2 last year and it works great. We upgraded to Tiger, and that was a big problem, so we went back to 10.3.9 and all was fine. I believe you can install Tiger on the second drive, if you like, for apps other than M100. We did buy the Magma expansion chassis, and if you do, go for the QUIET model, which is only a bit more in dollars, but worth it. We popped in a second internal drive for media – Maxtor SATA 250 Gig – and everything has worked. We use firewire G-Raids for addtional storage. Make sure you install the newer Media 100 codecs as well. Media 100 HD was beyond our budget, but we chose to stay with M100 rather than go to FCP…just personal preference. Good luck!
