1. Best way to display source time code on timeline
A. The only two ways I know how to do this is to select ‘tools/scripting/add timecode to all media’. This drops a source TC window in each clip. Not the most elegant but better than no source code. Can be removed with the ‘remove timecode from all media’ under the scripts menu. My preferred method is to right click on the clip/s in the bin and select ‘Media FX’ then choose Sony timecode. I then set TC window size at .5 for both height & width for small TC insert. TC window insert can be removed through right click/Media FX in the bin2. Keyboard shortcut to move focus to trimmer
A. ALT+23. Shortcut to move focus to explorer/bins
A. ALT+1 for Explorer, ALT+5 for Project Media4. Shortcut to matchframe from timeline (load source footage of
timeline event with in/out selected in trimmer).
A. The only way I know to do this is once you have marked your I/O points on the timeline clip is to double click left button on the shaded area between the I/O points above the ruler bar and then right click on the clip and select ‘open in trimmer’ where the I/O selection will be highlighted. I stress the word ‘marked’ because if you just drag select an I/O selection the double click on the shaded area between the points won’t work. You must mark IN and mark OUT with the I & O keys. If you just require Matchframe right click on your cursor on the timeline and select ‘open in trimmer’. Trimmer cursor is now at matchframe point.5. Shortcut to clear / unmark In and Out points.
A. Vegas doesn’t appear to have one that I know of. Vegas I/O points work differently to almost any editor I know. Doesn’t hamper my workflow though. Incidentally the ‘backspace’ key will allow you to jump back to five previous I/O selections.6. Shortcut to select the event the cursor is parked on, marking the
event edges as In and Out.
A. Left mouse button ‘double click’ on an event/clip and its total duration will be selected. Here again the right click ‘open in trimmer’ command can be used again in which case the whole clip will be in the trimmer window.Vegas is a different world. The established paradigm of ‘Avid methodology’ is not followed here. None the less Vegas has many strengths if you are prepared to learn it well. I know after having delivered around three-hundred programs for television… all done on Vegas.

DVFilm are working on getting their Raylight Ultra P2 plugin working with AVC Intra asap. At the moment I know of no way to handle P2 AVC Intra in Vegas. Ultra will currently handle all other flavours of P2.
Keep an eye on:https://dvfilm.com/raylight/ultra/index.htm

Panasonic P2 MXF files are not an issue any longer in Vegas. DVFilm’s Raylight ULTRA
https://dvfilm.com/raylight/ultra/index.htm
fully supports P2 MXF SD and HD files in Vegas. Just drag ’em on the timeline and edit away.
At the moment Raylight ULTRA is supported with Vegas 8.0c and will shortly be supported with v9.0. DVFilm are also working towards full ULTRA support of P2 AVCIntra 50/100 in Vegas. Once that comes on line there won’t be much in the way of file based camera ‘footage’ that you won’t be able to handle in Vegas.
As I have been asked by quite a few as to how you do it with P2 I will be demo’ing Raylight ULTRA in Vegas 8.0c at our SMPTE Broadcast Expo show in Sydney third week of July for any of you locals who may be interested.

Yes Norman. I have since discovered the MX O2 Mini will only work with Adobe. Matrox and Adobe have a fairly tight development agreement and have had for quite some time.
The new Decklink Studio
https://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/decklink/
May well work with Vegas with the new v9 drivers as It’s designed to work under DirectShow. You wouldn’t get any of the accelerated effects that you get with Premiere but if the capture / output and monitoring work this would be a good uncompressed capture board. The Sony Vegas distributor here in Australia is having a look at this option to see if it can co-exist with Vegas.
Why Sony don’t get their finger out and sit down with people like Blackmagic to make sure Sony users have more than the AJA devices for output and monitoring I don’t know. Both Sony and Blackmagic are missing out on sales. For Vegas to be accepted in the wider professional market it must develop more hardware interfacing.
From Sony’s point if they wish to promote an even wider acceptance of the XDCam file based work flow and help sales of XDCam hardware the more complete Vegas becomes Sony can only benefit. To help towards that end uncompressed support of SD and HD is important. We shoot almost exclusively with XDCam and edit native MXF, have done so now for the last two years. Yet for network delivery we still have to deliver on Digi-Beta for SD and HDCam for HD. This requires SDI / HDSDI uncompressed I/O.
I look with a certain amount of envy towards Premiere and FCP with their wider range of hardware interfacing. Sad when you stop to think that Vegas is as good and in many ways far better than either of those as a craft editor. Without further hardware interfacing Vegas as good as it is will float around on the edge of the Pro market and sadly will never quite fulfil its true potential.

Lay-up your multicam job, say four cameras for example. Sync them up as normal. If you have additional audio to put in create new audio tracks and drop in your media and sync those up with the rest of your tracks.
Next. On the track headers MUTE ALL audio tracks bar ONE. The one that you choose to be un-muted should be the one you are going to use as your main guide audio track for the switch. Now holding down the CTRL key go to the track headers and select all your video tracks and the one UN-MUTED audio track.
Next. Go to ‘Tools/Multicamera/Create Multicamera Track’. Once selected what will happen is that all you video tracks will collapse into the one Multicam video track you are used to but you will only have the one un-muted audio track as part of the switch process. All your other audio tracks are still there, still synced, visible but muted. They just aren’t currently part of the multicam switch audio. Now in the normal manner proceed with your ‘Tools/Multicamera/Enable Muticamera Editing’ and switch away.
When you have finished the video switch go back and un-tag ‘Enable Muticamera Editing’. Now you can un-mute all your audio tracks and do you multi-tack audio mix /levels as you wish. When happy with your audio mixdown render the one previously switched video track and all your new audio tracks out to one finished file. Voila! It’s switched and mixed.
Do it all the time and it works a treat.

If you look further down the posts you will see a number of them relating to crashes in 9.0. With program deadlines looming the issues with 9 are serious enough for us to go back to 8.0c.
Pretty reliable hearsay has it that that a fair bit of the crash / app hang issues in 9 are cantered around the Main Concept MPEG engine and it looks like coding / codec issues on their side could be the cause of a number of these problems. Sony have announced that they and Main Concept are working on these problems. Sony also announced that a patch will be released ASAP.
Little consolation but I have heard that Adobe users are also having major issues with CS4 crashing and it looks like their issues are also Main Concept related.
Problem is that Sony and Adobe are far from major customers of Main Concept so where it stands on MC’s priority list of fixes would be interesting to know.

Hi Norman ~
I to would be interested to hear about MX02 Mini. Especially when you see its specs up against Intensity Pro, MX02 is well ahead!

Yes, in both SD and HD with either the AJA XENA cards or the Blackmagic Decklink cards. Look under Options/Preferences/Preview device in Vegas and you will see the AJA card as a selection. For XENA, check out:
https://www.aja.com/products/xena/
Another possible option that that should work with Vegas is the new MXO2 Mini. Would be much more space efficient on storage than uncompressed but still give you good quality in SD or HD. It uses the Matrox I-Frame MPEG2 codec with up to 50mbit in SD and 300mbit in HD. It can also do uncompressed. For Matrox MXO2 Mini, check out:
https://www.matrox.com/video/en/products/mxo2_mini/
Familiar with the AJA workflow, it’s good, but I think the new Matrox offering is going to offer good $$$ value as well.

A little ‘ripper’ as we would say in Aussie. The 720p Quicktime output is very suitable! Thanks for the heads up.

June 1, 2009 at 5:04 pm in reply to: Firewire external preview crashing to be fixed in Vegas 9 updateDave ~
No I can’t say I have ever experienced the behaviour you mention on any version. Always had good full rate playback. At least on later model 3GB and up CPUs
What I have discovered though is if you make sure your preview window is 720×576(PAL) or 720×480 (NTSC) or if in widescreen 1049, yes 1049×576 or 480 most systems will play back on preview and output smoothly and with good quality over any period of time. Obviously frame rate will suffer and framerate will drop over complex bits of the timeline but that is to be expected on any software that derives all its horsepower from the CPU.
The above numbers seem to be an optimum settings as it appears there is no scaling of the video, it appears to be playing pixel for pixel. It gives you a big preview window which I don’t mind at all and from my experience the best playback for viewing and editing.
I have also found keeping your ‘Dynamic Ram Preview’ setting well down, like 16MB or so greatly helps in timeline playback stability and smoothnes. I only bump this figure up if I need to see a complex segment at full frame rate using the ram preview. After those sorts of previews I drop the figure back down again. Give it a try maybe?
