I’ts not a super cheap answer but it works pretty well and gives you far superior text and titling and also has the ability to go to 1440 x 1080 for HDV production. It’s Power CG Plus from Cayman Graphics. If you are used to tools like Inscriber Titlemotion it’s a snap to use and the best thing is that it works as a fully integrated plugin in Vegas 6.0.

Not in front of Vegas at the moment but had a similar issue with Century anamorphic material shot on a PD150 in 4:3. From memory the answer was to create a 16:9 job, bring in all your footage, right click and set the clip properties to 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, job done. If you have bins full of these 4:3 squashed clips there is a script called: ‘ChangeMediaPoolAspectRatio’ available which allows you change all pool clps in one hit. I think the script is in one of the bundles of Vegas 5 scripts available from:

    https://www.calderwood.org/

Once done edit the job as a normal 16:9 widescreen job and render out as such. Good luck.

    Hi Ed & Clan,

Been away filming and just received the news on getting back to the Cow. The most important things in life are your health and your family, the rest is secondary. As much as we all will miss your knowledgeable posts, and who amongst us haven’t benefited from them, we can all wait for you to rest up and make sure all is well. Relax with the family, chill out for a time and believe that we all send our best wishes and prayers to keep you company. God speed!

    Postscript:

Just tried a little utility to change date in DV file, can change time as well. Do your render then use this utility called ‘DV Date Time Changer’. Free download at:

    Norman ~

Not against the HVX-200 but against the Varicam. Check Tim Duncan’s post over at:

    https://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/new_read_post.cgi?forumid=142&postid=854837&pview=t#head

Also if you have subscribed to the Creative Cow magazine Tim has done a very comprehensive write up of the XDCam HD plus some observations about it vis a vis the Sony F900 and the Pana Varicam. Very interesting to say the least. I would have to agree with him that it’s about the quietest camera I have seen in the blacks, very nice indeed!

I don’t know any way of doing this to represent a clip by clip datestamp in a new rendered file. If you just want to create a new file with a datestamp of lets say a year ago to match the date of the original camera tape just change you PC date back to the date of your camera original before you render your new file. This new file will than have the year old datestamp. Don’t forget to change your PC date back afterwards 🙂

    Hi All ~

Seeing it’s now safe to talk about V7, had my first post pulled! Ron L. explained why so all was cool and understood. Mr. Sony didn’t want the info out prior to NAB. Prior to NAB we attended a Sony XDCam HD release day here in Sydney where we had a hands on day of the new cameras and BluRay DVR’s. A very good system were my first impressions. The 350 camera especially. During the course of this day we were shown a PowerPoint slide show. In this slide show were details of the V7 release in Sept ’06. The detail was that V7 will have direct I/O FAM (File Access Mode) with these cameras and will handle the 18/35 Mb/s VBR rates as well as the existing 25 Mb/s HDV format giving it backward compatibility with the current Sony HDV format. Interestingly we were told that Sony Media USA now had a couple software engineers working in Japan with the camera development team to get very tight integration between the cameras their formats and Vegas. So as Ron said, a lot of work to be done.

Apparently Sony Japan are now realising that Vegas is making serious inroads to the NLE market. Their latest figures putting FCP first, Premiere Pro second and Vegas solidly in third position and closing on Premiere. With the news that Adobe is pulling a lot of the ‘bundling’ options of Premiere being available with various video cards it was hoped Vegas would move into second place. The impression a few of us got was that Sony was aiming the XDCam HD system into the market as an ‘affordable’ complete HD system, including NLE software integration, with Vegas. So interesting times ahead I think.

May 6, 2006 at 2:15 pm in reply to: Video Card Question

I notice you are doing a lot of render to ram previews. This would indicate to me that you have your Dynamic RAM settings under (options/preferences/video tab) set to a high level to enable those ram renders. Personal experience has shown me if you leave this high you will get choppy playback. I now run our systems with the ram preview set to ‘0’ or ’16’MB. Since then no problems with choppy playback.

Vegas seems to play back fine and release ram at the low ram settings. Under Task Manager you will notice it gobbles up ram on playback if that Dynamic RAM setting is left high and this is where the problem seems to lie as when this is set high it won’t release ram properly.

If I have to do a ram preview I will then reset to a high setting. I know when I have forgotten to put it back down because soon as I start editing again it gets choppy playback. Give it a try. One of our systems has a high end 256MB PCIe ATI card and the other two don’t have yet they all exhibit the same problem on high dynamic ram settings, so the video card IMHO has little to do with the problem.

As someone else pointed out check that you are set to DMA on your video drives. Hopefully you have a separate drive/s for video. Other things that can compound this problem is over full video drives and bad defragmentation.

When I have seen this happen, not saying this is the problem but it’s worth checking out, is if you have some large still pics on the timeline, especially 32 bit TGA’s. Another thing to check is that you have ‘Dynamic RAM preview’ under options/preferences/video set to 16MB for the render session. Because if it set too high Vegas tends to consume all available ram plus the page file climbs through the roof eventually causing Vegas to ‘hang’ with a similar exception dialogue to the one you just posted. It can also be caused by a corrupted graphic on the timeline.

If all or any of the above is not the cause of your problem you could try a work-around. Render your timeline out in say three or four segments and then bang them into a new Vegas timline and render out as a single file. That should hopefully get you over your deadline problem. If all that fails blame Bill Gates:-)
