anything that is 8 bit stays 8 bit unless it is degrained by neatvideo or debanded.
if you changed the gamma, and you need to ungrade the gamma later, you need 10 bit or higher. 16 bit is overkill unless you need 100% lossless TIFF/DPX/PNG image sequences. Even prores 12 bit or arriraw 12 bit is enough. 16bit can hold raw in linear light format for cgi. A high bitrate wavelet codec like 12 bit Apple ProRes 4444 XQ or 444, or even 422 HQ could be enough for multigenerational grading.
